My lil' Twin - A 1974 Honda CB360T Rebuild
« on: October 03, 2011, 01:36:48 pm »
I was casually browsing Craigslist earlier this year when I saw this gem. It was a 1974 CB360T bike in relatively good shape. It came with a mostly complete (except for tins) parts bike, tons of spare parts, and a lot of work already done. This is how it was as purchased:

Parts bike & parts:

I could not decide what I wanted to do with it. A few times I thought about reselling it for parts and rolling that into another project. A few months passed and I decided to keep it. Let the breakdown begin!

The frame and other parts had their usual rust and gunk:

Applied some de-greaser:

Back from sandblaster:

Primed:

First/second coat of gloss black enamel:

I have one more coat to spray then time for clear coat.

Motor before Purple Power, garden hose, nylon brush, and mineral spirits:

After:

One of the many forth coming upgrades:

360 Hondas were one of the most sold bikes ever, especially during the first "gas shortage"-the one when people were shooting each other while waiting in lines. It looks like you have a great foundation...Larry

If you remember that first "gas shortage" you must be my age.
Anyway it was terrible because you could not pump your own gas in some places and there were long lines often for blocks. Then some dumb ass would drive up in a pick up truck and start filling a 55 gallon drum in view of many people waiting in line and all the people were sitting there in 100º+ heat it did get scary and tempers flared and yelling would start.
People started hoarding gasoline and there were many fires at houses from gasoline igniting. The price of cars dropped to almost nothing.

All this went on for a couple of months or so.

Here it is all these years later and we still have gasoline.
Many people felt betrayed by the government. The military did not run out of gas.
They bought extra gas in the months preceding this "gas shortage"

Some people were sitting in their car with the air conditioning on waiting to get gas. I felt sorry for them. But some were old people and that heat would kill them. It got up to 114º for a couple weeks in August in Tucson ,Ariz.

The most valuable thing then, was a Bicycle.
People selling bicycles made a killing.

At the shop I worked we were making a killing selling 360s.  The salesmen were sizing up the customer(many had never ridden a motorcycle before ??? ???) and adding whatever they felt like they could get away with to the suggested list.  I'll be 65 way too soon...Larry

Second and final coat of clear is drying for all parts minus the frame. I will get to it tomorrow. It's not a pro paint job by any means but it looks much better then it did before.

Cleaning up the motor with Eagle One cast aluminum cleaner:

I have some extra engine case covers. Trying to decide how I want to do the motor: leave it rough aluminum, paint, or polish.

The frame looks like new so I am probably going to rule out the rough aluminum look. Will go for something clean.

Very nice indeed!  8)

I picked up a 1973 350G a couple of weeks ago. Fun little bike. I named it "scooter".

Completed silver paint on top half of motor. It's not perfect by any means. There are a few bubbles and other areas that I will need to touch up later on I am sure but looks better then it did:

There are some really rusty nuts/bolts and a motor mount bracket that even the wire wheel is not working that well on. They need a soak in my easy rust removal method:

The first of my parts have started arriving. This little pain in the rear only took 20 mins to install. The inner diameter claimed on the website was a bit smaller in reality. I had to do a little modification. But it looks awesome.

Keeping the mug warm on a quick morning ride..

Christmas came early! Clipons should be here by Monday.

Sexy new indicators. I have for front and rear.

Loaded Gun Customs rearsets installed.

DCC's 'universial' linkage is loo long. I will need to measure and cut a few inches off.

Checking out position for my new mono-gauge setup. Pre cut holes for key switch, turn indicators, oil, and neutral.
