Spark plug hole and grit
« on: October 04, 2011, 02:59:35 AM »
I pulled my spark plugs the other day to check mixture and found no. 2 came out with some small stones and grit around the washer. It seems that the CB750 design lends itself to stones and grit getting caught in the spark plug recess, then the chance that these will fall down into the cylinder when you pull the plugs out. You can't really see in there, and if you have a little bit of oil in the recess it would prevent hosing out the grit before pulling the plug.

Are these bikes susceptible to cylinder scoring / ring damage due to grit falling into the cylinder? If so, how can you prevent it?

lots of bikes have that "feature"compressed air and blow away any debris regularly,,and before you pull the plugs.

I have never had one score from that source, that I know of, but it sure is possible.  I like to look down in there first and hit it with some compressed air and brake cleaner if in doubt.  The cleaner has to be wiped or dried quickly or it will strip the paint.

Compressed air is the only option I know of as well but it helps if you attach about 12 inches of clear hose to the end of your airgun so you can direct the air flow better.

It's a royal pain to get the air gun nozzle into the tight spaces and this helps.
