My 72 CB750 is missing
« on: September 27, 2011, 07:32:07 PM »
I've had this bike now for a couple of weeks and it has a nagging problem.
If I'm riding and try to maintain a constant speed/rpm it will start to miss a little. This will happen at 2700 rpms up 7000+
The bike starts 1st kick every time, idles perfect, accelerates through the gears better than any 750 I've owned, no hesitation or miss while accelerating. The engine is stock as far as I know other than headers with mini baffle mufflers, and '78 K8 carbs. I have not started trying to track down the problem yet. I wanted to get advice from more knowledgeable guys first.
Thanks for any help.

I'd replace the spark plugs before going any further. While doing that - check condition of plug caps and leads - unscrew each cap and check condition of HT end - cut off a small slice to get a nice clean end and rescrew back on. Check plug caps with Ohmmeter to check what resistance u are getting.  Also check and report back on the colour/condition of the plugs = sooty? White? Wet? etc.
After that - there is a long list...
regards
Mark

Mark,
Thanks for the reply.  I did just as you recommended.  The plugs I removed all looked good to me, clean, dry, not sooty, brownish gray color.
I replaced them with new ones anyway.  I removed all caps cleaned the insides, trimmed the wires and reinstalled caps. All checked out good.
I rode the bike for 40 minutes and had the same problem except it cleared up and ran perfect mid-ride for 10-15 minutes then  the missing reoccured.
When I first got the bike the #1 carb float would stick and after I rode a while it would overflow gas. Tapping on the side of the carb never helped, but the problem went away with regular riding of 30-60minutes a day.
My question is could this carb be "acting up" at times and cause the problems I am seeing?
Thanks

Well,..yeh...I guess. Depends on how the missing feels and how bad it is - 1 bad carb vs 3 good cylinders..I'm not sure how much would be noticeable. I would step thru the electrics before going to the fuel system. It needs doing anyway. But always approach solving anything methodically - not dynamically trying to zero in a "likely" cause. You've done the plugs/leads, now check the points - are they badly pitted, out of gap,...clean/check and/or replace...then..

-  ignition timing. Follow the manual to check timing is set true.
- coils. Related to spark plugs,,,but - now check HT leads back to colis are sound. I had 1 that was nearly broken thru where it entered the coil. It is an easy job to replace the HT leads in the colis, but does require pemanent disfigurement and scarring - cutting them open. Well covered on this site.
- back to plugs - did it do it before u replaced the plugs? If not, you may have a naff plug. Get a spare and swap out 1 at a time.

Given it farts about only when you are running at speed and not always - I'd have to think fuel contaminant or irregular supply.

- So now to FUEL. There are better experts then me on this subject - but here's my advice.
- is fuel in tank clean and pretty much free of sediment? no? get busy. Don't go futher with any crud in there!
- check fuel lines from petcock to carb rack - must be downhill WITHOUT kinks.
- check each rubber coupling from carb to head for leaks, cracks etc. Spray with WD40 or something with motor running to see if revs increase to indicate a leak. You often hear a farting "fffhhhttt" sound from a leak here. Check the retaining bands at both ends are zipped up.
- drop off the float bowls and pull out mains jets, emulsion tubes, float valves, idle jets. CLEAN, blow, check replace. Can be done on bike with all bowls off,...replace the inside ones 1st to leave room for outers. Getting retaining clips back on can be annoying. Check u have suitable jets for your engine. Stock may or may not suit your config if u have different header/pipes. e.g. i have 40 idle jets and 120 mains - printed on them.Good grey/brown plugs should mean this is likely to be AOK though.
- try to check float bowl level - advice on this site for using the overflow outlet with a tube attachd to measure contents.
Else,..and best,...pull off the carb rack and pull it all open and clean, blow air and check float levels at 26mm.
After this - I'd hope for someone like TwoTired to come and help..
Good luck
Mark :)

I had a somewhat similar issue, and mine turned out to be that the number 2 cylinder plug wire was arching to the cylinder head, causing a miss.  I wrapped it in electrical tape and it took care of the problem.  I'd try starting it at night and inspect it for arching.

Problem solved.......3 plug wire was cracked going into the coil. I did not notice it when I cleaned and inspected the cap/wire connections. I feel like a dumb@ss for not catching it.
Imagine that, 40 year old spark plug wires get hard and start to crack!!

Thanks for the help guys

Mark, you the man!
