License Plate Bolt Size?
« on: October 04, 2011, 05:21:16 AM »
Dumb question here.  I was out on a ride last night and I guess my license plate wasn't on that tight...fell clean off!  I recovered the plate, but it was dark and couldn't find the bolts.  I'm going to stop at the hardware store on my way home.  Anyone know the bolt size for motorcycle license plates?  I don't know the thread width.  Thanks!

Think I just use a short 1/4" diameter bolt with a slot head with a lock nut. I have been known to swap the plates around just a little also.  8)

1/4x20 with a lock nut or acorn nut in stainless.  Unless it is a 25K Sandcast then you will need to determine original pitch and thread as well as surface treatment.  :-)

If it doesn't have an 8 stamped on the head it can't be used on a Sandcast !!!  :o

My thoughts exactly. Just buy a package of shorter stove bolts with nuts and washers. They are good to have on hand anyways.
