titled to my old engine
« on: September 07, 2011, 10:03:53 AM »
i bought a bike last year. the title was to the engine #, not the frame #. I then bought an engine since the one with the title is not in good condition.

now my bike no longer has the engine in it that is titled. how can i get the title switched over to either the frame or engine?

i figured
a-dont say anything
b-take pics of everyhing and say the engine w/title was blown
c-?

I'd call the DMV, or whoever deals with vehicle titles in your state, to see what they say.

Florida won't look at the VIN plate.  They only look at what is stamped on the neck.  I'd second Gordon's thought of calling and asking.  Then if they say you can't do it, don't bring it up.  In Florida, they only check the VIN when you first register it in the state.

Title is usually to the frame AND engine #.
It is not a big problem.
No reason to be in fear of the DMV.
I california many times you can just change the engine # on the title by drawing one line through the old number and then write the new number of the new engine and initial it. When you sell the bike then the new title for the new owner will have the corrected number typed in.

Just check with your local DMV . No reason to have so much fear.

Many vehicles require new engines - happens all the time.

They would have to look at the plate if the stamps on the neck were ground off.  I'm just sayin'

Good point.  I wonder what they would do...

Uh, that is fraud. How many bikes have you ground off the stamps, and then sold? I had a friend who almost went to jail because of an altered serial number on a Harley motor. In the end, the motor was confiscated, and destroyed. Ground off stamps can be raised with an etching process..

Bike ISN'T titled as soon as you swapped engine. You should have re-built original, or if cases were damaged, gotten title transfered (if that's possible?)
Friend has same 'problem' with his bike, took almost 2 yrs of messing around, less than two weeks when someone actually checked the numbers (me!, then DMV)
You CAN completely strip and rebuild a CB360  engine (including new heavy duty cam chain, tensioners, etc) in about 10~11 hrs from rattling in to riding out
