wanted: gas cap latch
« on: May 13, 2006, 09:39:43 PM »
i need that little peice that holds down the gas cap

the local junkyard office burnt down and it appears that another yard bought all their bikes, so now i have no resource to get parts from, it sucks, i drove 45min and when i pulled in there was nothing but a huge area of emptyness and a destroyed building which used to be the office/storage for newer wrecked bikes

I got a NOS factory updated locking latch on E bay recently. I'm pretty sure there's one or two available on auction now, so you might do a search. This is a direct bolt on part, genuine
Honda that uses your ignition key (or just about any key) to open the cap. I see a lot of tanks
around that have had this upgrade in the past. These parts may have been part of  recall, but not sure of that. Anyway, they work good. Good luck with your search.

The only way to get the original catch is on a used tank. Dave Silver stockes the lock upgrade for £10 (GBP) plus shipping, its actually a 400/4 part

I MUCH prefer the original thumblatch, but they are hard to come across and they are not very strong since they are "metallized plastic".

Reportedly the switch was made because in crashes, the tank would pop open, spilling fuel everywhere and causing a fire hazard.  Also, there was a fellow, in the UK I believe, that got into a crash and he slid forward onto the tank and the opened cap damaged his er...gear, and he had to have one or both nuts removed.  :o :o  The resulting lawsuit helped push the switch to the "locking" gas cap and later, the flat, low-profile gas cap flap.

That sounds a bit of an "Urban Myth".  Tried typing it into snopes?

What would you search on?  "Biker loses balls" ....

Apparently CMS still sells the original thumb latches.

What bike is this for? I've got a couple of spare 550 tanks with good latches on them.

Are all of those parts shown at the CMS site still available thru them?
