Milling Hub for Second Disc
« on: December 09, 2013, 08:43:04 AM »
Has anyone every milled the left side of a front wheel hub on a 750 so it has the same rotor spacing as the left side? Im doing a custom front end swap with Betor forks, dual thinned discs and Lockheed calipers and its a tight fit and looks lopsided, so I figured I could mill down the one side to match spacing on the other, thereby taking away the lopsided look and giving me a bit more clearance. It looks to be about 5-7mm but Im not sure as I have not done more than eyeball it at this point. I guess all I need to know is if there is a danger to me doing it safety wise?

You should be able to figure out thickness, once bearings are out.
Try flat discs, or make some..may eliminate a lot of hassle.
May need to make a new hub or use a narrower one like honda 200 with cable operated disc.
When I put the big floater on the Ceriani, i discovered that the Yamaha mags are the narrowest, and easy to work with..

The stock rotors have already been thinned and match the rear thinned one, but I only need a bit more room to make the Lockheed calipers work the same on both sides. That will make mounting a ton easier as well. Im in a money-raising frenzy right now and will be documenting this and other projects in a build thread soon.

Have had the same clearance problem with spoke wheel, Ceriani fork and Lockheed calipers.
Easiest and cheapest way. Use a Moto Guzzi hub and make adapter plates for Honda discs.
I use a bicycle speedo, so the missing speedo mount does not hurt me.
Plenty of room now.

I did a lot of machining to accommodate the stock hub in my fork swap project.
Take a look at the build and see if these pics help at all.

Thats really top shelf work FJ. My issue is this, I have Lester mag wheels and wont change them. Its an element to the bike that I dont want to compromise on. I really dont have an issue modifying it as long as its done right and will stand the test of time. I think once I can get an accurate measurement of how far offset the other side is, I can match that spacing on the left side by taking that amount off the hub face. I have a vision for what I want this to look like but Im hung up on this one thing. Is there a safety concern?

Well, that might be a different question. I thought you where asking if we have ever machined a stock Honda front hub so both rotor mounting surfaces where equal distance from center. Is that the question or are you asking if it's safe to similarly machine a Lester mag?

Yes, thats essentially my question. Can it be done and can is it safe to do so? Im pretty determined to make this combo work but everyone has their limits so before I get too far down the road I want to make sure this last piece (should have been earlier in the work flow chart) will indeed work.

Firstly, it is going to be difficult to find a lathe large enough to spin a 19" mag wheel.
You may need to consult a wheel repair shop for that. Milling is a possibility, but both rotor mount faces must be perfectly parallel.

Secondly the Lester mag would need to be measured for material thickness on both sides and compared to determine if sufficient material exists before proceeding. Considering the availability of Lester mags, I doubt anyone has attempted or has had need to modify them.

754, can you give a little more detail on how you would go about doing it?

Put a spacer on the bottom side..
Clamp wheel either on spokes, or hub shoulder..leave tool clearance
Clock in disc face to 1/2 thou or better.
Center wheel by clocking in disc snout.
Use boring head to cut away material....

I'm picking up what you are laying down 754. I will talk to my local machinist to see if he can make that setup work. Off topic but for the same bike, do you still make the rear motor mount for the early F models like you did for Doctor_D? That was one sweet piece of custom bracketry. PM with the details if you do.

I'd be down for a front and rear set for my 76F. Are the frame kits you speak of like the Gordons kit?
