I have been pondering the idea of getting a custom oil tank for my CB 750 and opening up that triangle. I plan on getting a custom made flat tank that hides between the frame where the inner fender sits. I found someone on ebay who makes me one for a reasonable price. Now I was wondering, do I need those big size original oil lines or can I go with a smaller diameter? Anything else I should be watching out for?

Also, what is a good small battery that I can lay down in my seat hump and what is the min cranking amerage I need?

No I think it's another guy. What about the size of the tank? Should I make it as big as the original or can it be smaller? Any experience with that?

MOST lines are smaller OD for correct size than the stock Honda ones.
If you are thinking of reducing capacity, think about how hot the temps will be that you ride in and if you will be getting stuck in traffic a lot.
If I am riding across a desert in high temps I like to throw in an extra quart, which you can do with the stock bucket.. idling in traffic can get a bike VERY hot...

I did mine to match the OEM capacity just hide it under the custom gas tank also keep the OEM OD hoses

There have been many dry sump bikes that have been built using smaller oil tanks than stock one. An oil cooler will definitely help with the heat issues. You will need to change the oil sooner also.

I personally would not use any line with a smaller ID than stock, especially on the supply line to the oil pump. 5/16" ID line is asking for disaster, IMHO.

+1, so is running less oil, it will heat up faster stay hotter and need changing more regularly, loose a little and you will be in big trouble...

First of all thanks guys. I definitely do not want to run an oil cooler since I want to stay as minimalistic as possible. I ride a lot in the heat, CenTex was in the 100s most of this year, so from all I hear I think I might be staying on the safe side and won't go as small as possible, neither with the tank size nor with the line diameters.

One other question I had, what is a good, cheap battery to hide in the seat hump and what is the cranking amperage I need for a stock K7? Also, isn't there an after market rectifier out there that is much smaller?

Check our my build thread, my oil tank will double as a bit of an oil cooler. 100% hand made from Al, so thermal exchange should be decent too. I haven't mounted it yet, but with TT's "anti-pod" intake, I should have a very nice open triangle!!

How many K on the choppers.. Under marginal conditions, going 5 or 8 K is bugger all.. I meam many of us have put 30 K or more on CB 750 motors or bottom ends.. some over 100 K

little_horse from here made it. his name is Andrew and it's in Beaverton, OR. HELLUVA guy, had the chance to meet him a couple nights ago up there and go to dinner. he is quite an awesome fabricator! i won't divulge the price i paid for it, as him and i worked on some deals since i gave him a good amount of work (fully custom cowl, oil tank, gas tank work, a custom exhaust tip and bushings for my truck) over the past few months.

i ordered the bungs and filler from BungKing.com and shipped them to him. he fabbed up the tank to my dimensions, which i had another member on here, Brenden throw together in solidworks for me. here's what he did. i certainly love these forums, the people on here rock!!

i think the cooling fins will work well, and the tank should hold about the same amount of oil as the stock tank, maybe just a tad less. shoot Andrew a PM, he would love the business! here's his build thread: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=64250.0

i don't mind you borrow it, just as long as you give credit where it's due. me for the design but mainly andrew for the work and brenden for the cad skills.

but the main thing, don't just copy mine. make it your own, come up with some of your own ideas. andrew loves a challenge, so give him something that's cooler and better than mine! no sense just copying something that's already out there. take it to the next level on your own. ii even considered vertical fins on the rear, so start thinking of stuff to customize your own bike.
