Freaky, I'll be doing a shake down ride tomorrow, then I'll see if it's really fixed, I'm not straying away from home too far until I'm confident it's  running right, that towing bill still stings!

Well it only took a 29 mile yesterday to find out my bike is still not right, though it did run better with the timing adjustment. So  it has to be that Dyan that's crapped out after all. I'll only put another one on if Dynateck gave it to me free, other wise I probably should go back to points and get Hondamans unit. Any opinions on Pamco's unit out here?

Hi Vern, glad you still have your bike and have done some riding.... ya know if I was you I'd just go back to points..... for like a year or so and get riding without worry about electronics, then maybe consider Pamco, HM or another Dyna but take a break from aftermarket stuff for a while first, considering your experiences !....... my 2c.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Hey Spanner, I agree with you, I am so done with that Dyna, I wouldn't trust another one even if they gave it to me. Where's a good place to get everything I need to get back to points?

Not sure why, but it seems that all Dyna ignitions die in a similar way on cyl two and three. I just recently went through a similar process (mine was quicker though) with a problematic Dyna S. Throw that thing away! I am back on Points, but will probably get Hondaman or Pamco in the future.

BB - click here for points assembly, good quality made in Japan. Don't buy the cheap Chinese crap!

Yeah, those Dynas are pieces of expensive crap that can't take the heat our bikes put out it seems and I've read a lot of threads of theirs failing, so it's not just us it's happened to. The Pamco seems like a better option and designed to function at a higher temperature so a  I may give it a try if I buy another electronic ignition.

Mine is from Cycle X and it has temp issues too. I finally modified the points cover to allow for some air flow to attempt to keep the electronics in there cool and that seems to work. Cycle X sent me a new one and I still use it...but not without a keen eye to the conditions in which I'm riding, i.e. stop and go traffic on a hot day. Also I haven't had any issues yet with the new unit they sent me but my next project will have points only with Hondaman's setup.

I thought about drilling holes in my cover also but I need unit that i can trust, so I just ordered a Pamco ignition this morning. Replacement covers are not cheap and I wouldn't another Dyna on my bike even if it was free.

Personally I wouldn't take a bike that old on a 500+ mile one way trip (unless there was a support vehicle/trailer). I rode out to Mid Ohio in July which was about 725 miles one way....I rode my Hayabusa. My CB has had all those mentioned components replaced over the years. Would it make a 1,700 miles in 3 days? Probably but I'm not going to roll the dice on that one. Those days are over for that bike.

Hey I rode that same journey (Boston -Mid-Ohio) on my K4 - yeah the same one you rebuilt the engine on ....good to know at least one of us trusts your work  ;)  It made it there and back (within 4 days - 1400+ mile round trip) with its 7 year old Dyna S working away nicely...that same Dyna S is still working 3 years later...which would make it 11 years and 40,000 trouble-free Dyna S miles. Perhaps the newer ones are suffering quality control issues...

BB good luck in getting your own bike to be as reliable  - it can be done!

That's what I have gathered from the failed Dyna reports over the last couple of years; they were all only a few years old.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Misery loves company, doesn't it? Consider yourself real lucky Andy, I got about 6700 on my Dyna before it started acting up.
