CHROME SPRAY PAINT
« on: May 16, 2006, 09:38:40 AM »
Any one have any exprerience w/ this stuff.  Duplicolor makes chrome, and red/blue anodized color spray paints.  Looking for a new color on the tank and leaning towards silver or maybe chrome if doesnt look like #$%*.

I have heard that the "chome" doesn't last for a damn, as it starts to flake & stuff.
Not sure about the other...

I've tried about 10 different "chrome" spray paints over the years. There's more paint than chrome in the product. If you want a part to look like its silver painted (in different degrees of shine from the different manufacturers) then the stuff is good. If you want something that looks like chrome - well the platers is the only place.

in my expeirence, from a distance you cant tell the difference between krylon chrome and real chrome. this was on a set of wheelie bars on my harley. the top tubes were chrome, bottom were krylon

My old Volvo's front bumper peeled a little so I filled in with that stuff. It's OK from a distance, but you won't fool anyone on a large surface.  Krylon has some kind of textured look that I'd like to try some time. Sort of a "beaten" look.

I just recently painted my CB550 tank, side covers, etc with the Duplicolor Anodized Orange color. It took me two attemps to get the tank looking reasonable. I'll try to post some pics in the gallery soon. It looks alright, but to be honest I wouldn't do it again using rattle can paint.

Here's why...
1.) The amount of prep work is the same no matter how you paint it. If you want it to come out good spend a lot of time on prep work.

2.) By the time you get enough duplicolor paint to prime, color and clear coat the tank you'll have as much invested as in one of dirtbikerdon's paint kits.

3.) The rattle can paint is just too soft. One good bump into something and paint will chip even after a few of months of cure time.

4.) It's too difficult to get a nice wet looking finish with the rattle can. It just dries to fast and you're struggling with oversray through the whole process.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty happy with the results I got but in the end it just was not worth the labor or the expense. If you have a friend with an paint sprayer, buy the paint and have him hook you up.

I have used the Krylon and find it the best. Having said that, it really looks good on small parts. I use it for exposed nuts and bolts and even against real chrome it really looks fine. I did the engine mounts and they look good also, but we are talking parts that are a couple of inches in size. A Tank would look a bit funky

From a Harley owner standpoint let me tell you (I've heard we're opinionated) all that chrome really looks good on the right bike (also Honda owner) but it sure reflects right back into your eyes on a bright day. Darker shades on my Fat Boy / lighter shades on my 750F.  8) 8) 8)

Rattle-can paint won't hold up to fuel and gets dull spots wherever gas drips on it.  I've tried the "anodized" looking paint, and it too won't hold up to chemicals and gas either.  Carb cleaner goes right through it.

There is a new paint system out that duplicates the look of chrome.  It's great for fiberglass bumpers and such.  It'a two or three stage paint that is applied professionaly in a booth, but the results are great.  Ask your local custom painter for details.  If I can find the link I had, I'll post it.
