My grandpas bike I got for free
« on: October 11, 2011, 09:00:12 PM »
The story is this 1974 cb750 was last licensed in 1994, I was born in 1993 LOL. Every time I visited my grandfather I noticed this big old motorycle sitting in his old cattle trailer with no windows and no tarp over it. I bugged him every time about it, and finally while my dad was working on getting his scooter running I pulled out that old girl. I started by removing the carbs and giving them a bath in pine-sol, I took the bowls off cleaned the carbs, some fresh gas and It fired! Low and behold my grandpa gives me the title to the bike and says "have at her".

Ever since I got it home on the trailer it's been nothing but cleaning re-cleaning the carbs 4 times and jumping on this forum for help. And it has been the best help ever, It is running amazing right now! All thanks to the awsome people on this forum like Retro Rocket, King Custom Cycles, and alfego just to name a few. thanks a lot guys! And i'm sure there will be more wisdom to come! Here is a pic of what it looked like the first day home on the trailer.

Too cool! You have a great grandpa. Have fun with it. How's your dad with this going on?

It isn't staying at the house much longer, I reserved a block of class at school for independent study. This mean I can keep it and finish the build this winter in my schools shop. I just have to document my adventure with an ipad for educational purposes.

What a great school project! What are your plans for it? Sure would look a lot better with the fairing and bags off...

Forget the boldor shocks if you want it to handle well, they are not much better than the stock shocks. try Ikon, Hagon, or some other reputable companies. I am sure others will chime in with some suggestions...

I've got Progressives in the rear and love them.  Unless the fork seals are blown up front, I'd say your best (easiest/cheapest) bet is to fill up with some fresh oil or ATF, as some like to do.  Progressive does make springs for the forks too, but I haven't used them so can't really comment.

Oh and congrats, definitely thank your grandpa as often as possible. He just handed you an amazing piece of history.  And be sure to throw your project up on here when you're done, we'd all love to see it!  Damned youngins and their newfangled iPads and technology..... ;D

those cb900 shocks are way better than the stockers...that would be a good, cost effective trade for ya

They may be marginally better than the originals but i have owned a couple of Boldors and the shocks were the first thing i replaced, they are NOT that much better, they heat up quickly if riding any distance and loose most of their performance, there are far better shocks around than those.

sorry Tanman...me and Retro will stop argueing the merits of cb900 shocks in your thread now...to clarify...cb900 shocks are at least somewhat better than the stockers...really good shocks start at about $200 a pair and go wayyyy up from there...

Bike is looking much better already. I would sell the fairing and buy some NEW shocks.

Hi Sean, no argument mate, wasn't meant to be argumentative, just when people ask about either suspension, tyre's or brakes i always answer with reasonable quality suggestions, i think all three should be treated as pretty much life saving devices , like good helmets and you know the saying, "if you've got a 10 dollar head then buy a 10 dollar helmet"   ;D ;)

Ha ha ok, I would like to spend less than $250 for a good pair if that is possible. I noticed that the pictures of these aftermarket ones have rings on both sides, whatsup with that? The stokers have a U on one side.

The "U" is called a clevis, you need shocks with the clevis at the bottom.... ;)

Welcome and congrats on the bike!  Whereabouts in MN?  I'm in SWMpls - riding season is just about done - the weekend is supposed to be decent, but I think we're facing a steady drop in the temps.  Oh well. It will be perfect for you to work on it over the winter and get ready for spring riding.  Keep us posted and keep the pics rolling as you document your work.

I'm near st.cloud, and yeah it's getting cold I just went to 115 main jets. Hey I have a question for anybody that can answer. I want to gear the bike down... a lot... what gears/ sprokets should I get so It's reall low but tops out around 100mph because I don't need to go any faster than that really. I would rather have the low end.

Nice bags and fairing. Post pics of them on the for sale thread and take good pics. May not sell right away but lots of people want those.  How many miles does it have? Did you do the 3k tune up to start off or your goal was to get the bike running before you started your build?
