World record of sorts
« on: October 10, 2011, 12:21:54 PM »
well, the new "superquadro" (oversquare) ducati 1200 sbk motor is out of the sack,

hard not be impressed by the numbers

195 hp @ 10.750 rpm..... from a twin, that's 92 from each single cyl :)

even more impressive is the bore X stroke: 112mm x 60,8mm, that's 1,84:1, ratio, dont think that even F1 cars went that far

im surprised they went with chains , the rumours where the cams would be gear driven
now if they can just get it to handle properly they can race it

its mixed chain and gears, like in the RSV4 priller,

who knows, the stressed engine thing might work great with the pirellis in sbk......

i hear it doesn't work too well at the moment , they have said that they are going to continue with the old bike for next year so that should give them a years breathing time to get it sorted . the marketing people are in for a hard job trying to sell a frame concept that has been rejected by the motogp team and is not wanted by the superbike team . and before you say it tg yes i know it will actually handle so well that 99.999999%of the people who ride it will never know the difference , the trouble is people think they can

And Bayliss is already posting lap times on the 1199 that are faster than he did on the 1198. I seem to remember Bayliss was a reasonable rider in his day ;-)

Yossef, I've not got a calculator with me but I think the Honda CRF250 single produces the same BHP per CC as the Ducati. Make the CRF into a 600 then couple to another one in a V formation and you have the same motor but from Honda and without the very short stroke. ::)

I guess the issue is Sam whether you can maintain the same power to cc ratio taking it to 600 and then maintain it again out to 1200? Doubt it's that simple but an interesting project. The ducati has an advantage at high rpm with the desmodromic valves but surely that must sap more hp out of the overall power delivery than conventional springs...?

yes they are , superstock will be very interesting next year , there is a new blade and the bmw is getting a major update .
back to the cam chains , you are right this year the aprilias did have a cam chain but last year [ the year they won ] it was just gear driven .

more background info:

http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2011/10/10/ducati-1199-panigale-superquadro-engine-over-square-design-and-huge-power/

Fancy stuff below; let's hope it does not live up to Ducati's-reliability-fame:
Quote
On the end of each exhaust cam drive gear is a centrifugal flyweight which retracts at
speeds below tick-over to rotate a “protrusion” from the concentric section of the cam,
creating sufficient inlet valve lift to act as a de-compressor. This enables the Superquadro engine to be started easily without using a larger battery and starter motor. When the engine starts and the camshafts begin to rotate at tick-over speed, the centrifugal flyweight flicks out, retracting the “protrusion” back into the cam and allowing complete valve closure for full compression.
