Recomnedations on a good powder coating or paint shop
« on: October 18, 2011, 06:36:12 PM »
I'm planning a winter project to completely rebuild one of my 750 project bikes and I would like to get the frame powder coated.  I'm also thinking of getting the engine painted as well as some other parts (fork lowers, wheel hubs).

Does anyone have any recommendations for shops in the Philadelphia area/suburbs? (I live in eastern Montgomery county, PA).

Or, any suggestions on how to find a good shop (questions to ask, things/experience to look for)?

I'm thinking I'll have the frame powder coated black, clear coat the fork lowers and wheel hubs, and try get the engine painted as close to original as possible (hopefully find a place that can successfully clear coat the engine cover pieces.)

I'm looking for a place that has the experience to know when to powder coat vs. spray paint... and knowledge on how to clear coat the aluminum covers.

Please let know if you have any suggestions and/or advice.

Thanks,
Chris

Im a painter but Im in Maine.

One thing I would ask if what kind of paint they use.. Spies-Hecker, and PPG are good brands of paint where you wont have problems down the road. Brands you dont hear of much is usually smaller shops that try to cut money by using #$%*ty brands of paint... A lot of people dont really think about paint companies, but instead, the shop. But the paint they use is one of the most important things when you get a few months on your bike. Also, Id probably try to get the word out and find a painter that will do it on the side, not through a body shop or customizing shop, they will get a lot more out of you then someone thats just doing it as sidework.
Just my 2 cents... Been in the business since I got out of high school..
