another addition..73 CB 350 F...
« on: October 10, 2011, 10:20:54 AM »
Greetings,

Woke up this morning on vacation for the week and did my usual searches. You never know what might pop up but this did at midnight in Vegas. A few text messages,a long phone call and the deal was sealed. Will pick up next week.

He has been told the cam chain is loose and the tensioner has been adjusted. I have the option to cancel deal with full deposit refund if I choose to do so however with only 14000 original miles I feel it might be something else.
suggestions and /or comments always welcomed from the forum.

I posted Craig's List link but he might remove the ad.

Hey tt....i might be relocating down to the east valley after our house up here sells.
I have family in Santa Rita ranch and Peoria.  Where you at?
gonna need some folks to ride with when i get down there  8)

I had those 4into2 Jardines on my '73 350F.  I couldn't justify spending more on exhaust than i did on my bike.  ;D  Still, i kept it as stock as possible.

Moving to Arizona? You're gonna love it.

I'm 250 miles west on the Nevada, California, Arizona border. I do get down your way when visiting my parents who live in Sun City West.

You never know. Might ride together some day.

He has been told the cam chain is loose and the tensioner has been adjusted.

The loose cam chain and the inability to get the tensioner to operate correctly is a common trait with this model.  There are lots of good tips to rectify the problem, here on this forum.  The best (in my opinion) is mounting a longer bolt in the "plug hole" location - just be careful not to over-tension.

Nice find and should be a fun toy!

Thank you for that information. I have not had the time to reseach this site for information. If this is the case then would you say it's ok to ride with this issue or fix the problem.

Thanks again.

Hey flybox, were those Jardine pipes loud? I don't like loud.

If they can be re-packed to make them quieter I'm good with the look.

For now.  ;)

Depends on how loose it is.  Many times the chain can be heard rattling if the carbs need synching.  Even then, it will make some noise, but if it rattles around too much it can wear the sides of the cases or maybe damage the slippers.  I'd say it best to fix the problem rather than chance doing damage.  (Besides, it makes a nice quiet-running motor than sounds like a fine watch at tick-over.)

Here is what I know at this time. The current owner is a very nice man and told me if I'm not happy he will refund the down.

1) Cam chain has been adjusted by a Honda dealer. Was told it was tight. We know the level of motorcycle mechanics today. I'll take that with a grain of salt.
2) Asked the level of noise on a scale of 1 to 10. He said maybe a 5.
3) Noise stops off idle. Can here a slight noise when backing off throttle.
4) I'll listen to it when I pick it up. Could be any number of things after doing some searching here. Poor adjustment, stuck tensioner, carb sync (I doubt it however), loose rear chain.

Appreciate eveyones help. I really want a 350F, hard to find one that is not trashed but don't want one that needs the engine split. Would be a Sunday ride bike for me.

Thanks everyone.

Hey flybox, were those Jardine pipes loud? I don't like loud.
no, not louder, just a different tone.  i liked it.  putting around the block, you wont wake the neighbors, but opened up, people could hear you coming  ;D  re-packing the baffles sure would make it quieter all around.  i never got around to taking the baffles out of mine to repack as the can bottoms were starting down the rusty path.

Arrived home safely yesterday. Did a little cleaning today and puttering around. Cam chain sounds fine to me. Clutch makes a little noise.

He put Mobil One in it. Not a syn fan however it is good oil. Would like to go back to at least a semi blend. Any thoughts?

Also, bike was manufactured in 07/72 and has a low number, I think, but titled as a 1973 model.
