Starting my 72 CB 750
« on: October 12, 2011, 03:15:43 PM »
Not much to see here...

I picked up a 1972 CB 750 from the original owner, in original condition other then the hooker 4 into 2 exhaust, a later model tank (the original rotted at the seams)

So after rebuilding the carbs, fresh fuel and a new battery, i was riding it up and down the road.
I threw on some clubman handle bars that I had in my rafters to get a better feeling

So, it runs, sounds good, tight sounding motor and seems to pull good throughout the RPM range.

Now, time for a few pictures and questions,

My entire plan for the bike is a good general clean up, rebuild the front forks and replace the rear shocks
(looking at these ones, in a 14 inch though)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/13-5-Air-Shocks-Absorbers-Clevis-CB750-RD350-RD-H2-400-/180656842497?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a0ffca701

I have ordered off ebay a small bikini type front fairing
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&item=160651285341&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

This seat will be ordered soon (my pan is shot and the foam is hard and rotten)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&item=400160185419&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

And this exhaust will be ordered as well
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648&item=200562198361&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

I am looking at this site and wanting to order the ribbed sidecovers from him
http://www.fb-stuff.com/store.html

The bike will be painted completely white, with some blue pearl rubbed in and a thick red stripe running down the center of front and rear fender as well as the tank.

Questions now:

What is the thoughts on these rear shocks? I have a friend who has them on his hot rod S3 with an H1 motor in it and loves them, I am 5 foot 3, 170 odd pounds, and will ride two up with my wife (shes 5 foot 1 120 ish pounds) so preload adjustment is a definite on anything i put on.

The CycleX exhaust i posted, Yea i know I will have more fun with the Hooker, but the looks and sound of that pipe just makes me horny, so I am going to sell the hookers, but what are they even worth? I will be selling them wire wheeled down and re painted black. no rust holes and inclue collars....

I am going to re lace both wheels, the stock spokes are kinda rusty, and the chrome on the rims isnt great, I would like to powder coat the rims white, and the hubs red, is there any problem with this?

Thanks all,

Curtis

So I put the bike in the basement for the winter and to do the work on it.

The front fender was pretty trashed, couple of dings and the normal surface rust. So being cheap, I took the grinder and chopped it down a bunch

Now before people go on about fork stability, I also have a Fork Brace going on the front end.

The tank has been removed (whoa, slow down, that took about 1 minute, were moving too fast here)

The tank is going to the body shop, as well as the re pop side covers (whenever I get them) and when the bikini fairing shows up. The front and rear fender will be chopped down a little bit more and then cleaned up and sent the body shop also

Yes, I posted a link to his site, stating I am going for the ribbed ones.

The plan for the bike is to have it not stripped down and cafe style, but just a good looking, very functional bike

Sounds like a good plan, very well thought out. You should enjoy the finished product for quite some time.

Thanks for the replies, when the wife comes back from the shopping trip from the states I will be able to take some real good pictures with the digital camera, not my cheap pos cell phone.

After my other thread on the shocks, I am going to wait and buy a really good pair of shocks for the rear, the front will still get a re build with progressive springs, seals, and oil.

Well some small updates.

Got in contact with Frankenstuff - ordered the ribbed side covers, sweet!

Went to the body shop and picked out my colour. Its 1993 Kenworth W900 White, I also bought a very small bottle of rainbow pearl to be mixed into the clear.

It will be a fairly heavy pearl in the clear, I really want it to pop when the sunlight hits it.

The tank and rest of the body panels will be sent to the body shop when they arrive here, they will be gone for most of the winter, bonus for me as I dont have to worry about the mutt deciding one of my ribbed side covers is a new chew toy...

This is the inspiration for the build (by the way, this is also my work truck)

Having a tough time trying to decide to keep chrome fenders or not... The wheels will not be done this year, next winter they will be when I put a really good set of tires on it and hop the motor up to the APE 1000 kit.

So here is the new set of signal lights I got.

They are close to looking stock, but about 75% smaller

They are fairly bright when i hooked them up to the battery, going to be removing the factory fork ears, the stock ones are fairly rotten, going to put a universal set on for the time being, going to be searching on ebay for a good stock set over the winter, maybe even over the summer.

So I got looking at the front end, going to paint the top triple tree in red to match the red stripe going down the center of the tank.  Fairly simple change that will update the look drastically.

pulling the top triple off tonight as well as the fork ears, headlight and various other tid bits to get ready for clean up and paint.

Undecided about gauges, stick with originals or go with speedhut electronic ones... tough choice at the moment.

Well, the project is moving along, got busy with some small house renovations to get alot done on the bike, but most of what I wanted done is done.

Top triple has been removed, I am going to stick with stock gauges, I would rather spend my money else where on the bike.

Both fenders have been removed to finish cutting down a bit and gleaning up/prep for paint.

headlight and front of harness removed

Fork ears - um how the eff do they come out? do I have to unbolt the lower triple?

Pics tonight, hopefully parts start showing up, got alot coming from ebay & members

Fork Ears slide onto the fork tubes so some disassembling is needed.

Nice plan, be sure to post lots of pics.

Don't loose the little "D" shaped spacers that go on the top triple tree clamps.  You need them and they prevent the bolts from applying too much force and cracking.

Toxic,

What disassembly are you refering to? my top triple is off, do i need to let the forks slide out the bottom to get the ears off?

I will not be re using these ears anyways, they are too far gone (insides are just rotten) i might even take a quick zippy blade and cut a slit up the back side of it and peel it around.

If you buy that seat for your bike on EBAY it comes from Viet Nam.

Wait till you find out how much the shipping is going to cost you !!!

I made the same mistake. Mistake O grande!

And you do not find out the shipping charge until you hit the purchase button.

Went and picked up my epoxy primer and colour for the fenders and triple clamp, will spray them tonight after work.

Still waiting on parts to arrive...
-fork brace
-velocity stacks
-ribbed side covers
-front fairing
-Hooker Header vintage exhaust decals
-New 7 inch headlight with bucket

Hoping the side covers and fairing show up this week or next so I can send them and the tank to the body shop.

Next job after the fenders and triple clamp tonight - remove wheels for polishing

Hooker Header decals showed up today

Got the fenders and top triple clamp primed last night, shot some red today, need to do one more coat when i get back, let it cure for a few days, then shoot the clear on them.

Tank is going out to my parents place this weekend to get sand blasted and ready for paint.

Did you treat the inside of the tank with sealer before you sent it out for painting?

If it gets powder coated you will have to do the sealer after the powder coating because they heat it to 350ºF  and of coarse it is more difficult to protect the  surface.

The tank is mint and rust free on the inside. The tank will not be powder coated, it will be just a base clear pearl clear.

Well, I got out bid on the Dunstall tank and seat tail combo on ebay, someone wanted for more then what i was willing to pay...

Heres a quick shot of the new sidecover

Brought home the fenders and top triple tonight, I want to re do the top triple, the stock gauges look terrible with the red, so I am going to put small gauges on there.

and close up of oil tank side cover

Does anyone have a larger picture of this honda logo too? I want a fairly large one for a decal for the shop.

Thanks
