Worst case scenario it breaks... not a huge deal.  Replace it and move on.  Once it breaks the tension should be removed and you should be able to get it out with vice grips or a pipe wrench.  I know it sucks, but waiting for a new bolt isn't the end of the world.

Get a 'six point' 12mm socket, 12 point will round the head off (cheap impact sockets work great)
Tap head of bolt first to re-form it a bit then beat the socket on.
Use a breaker bar as already described and keep beating on the 'head' of the bolt while applying pressure.
It's very rare this will fail, you keep enough pressure on breaker bar to 'turn' bolt.
If you apply too much pressure it tends to tilt and round off bolt head
You won't break case if you beat it too hard but you could possibly crack filter housing (I've heard of it happening but never seen it)

Good, if it didn't get too hot and good you had some oil, I really don't want doom for you.  As for the impact, if others are talking about hammering on the thing as you use a breaker bar, what's the diff?  Either probably has equal chance of working and unless you go ballistic you probably won't crack the housing.  I like the idea that maybe the rotor and stator have come to grips, there's gotta be some reason why it stuck.  But then, if it was running, sounded like gas starvation, jeez if the stator was grabbing the rotor, you ought to hear it.  Oh well easy to check.  Good luck!

normal thread,,you are trying the correct direction,if the bolt does come out but the hex is damaged you can buzz it down so a larger nut goes over it and have it welded on,these arent wheel nuts, once the cup is against the case and the o ring is snugged it only needs a slight pinch up tighter, you can see on this one at about 11 oclock where i had to use a chisel to nudge this one off once upon a time.

Looking directly at the nut, you want to turn it counter clockwise?  Are you so upset about things that you're going the wrong way?  If you are going counter clockwise and it won't go, you have to use more force.  A breaker bar is bad for one thing, the force is one sided.  Two guys with a T bar is better or some form of impact.  Do you know someone with an electric impact?

yes turning it counterclockwise.

I live in LA...I'll be lucky if any of my friends have a utility flash light...let alone an impact wrench..OR a welder to weld on a bolt or socket to the nub that is left after all this struggling.

i've already ordered a new bolt...so destroying it isn't a concern.  I'd rather NOT destroy the housing however.  I'm out of ideas...

Thinking of girding off the end of this bolt to get passed the retainer ring so at least the housing can slide off.  then I'll take a pair of vice grips to turn the bolt...??

Be careful though if you don't want to damage the housing.Grinding and such the head off is going to have to be flush with the housing and risky for damage.Seems hard to believe it won't come off,if its been off before recently. If you have a good bite with a socket, maybe solidly wap the end of your ratchet or pipe you may have slid over for more leverage with a rubber mallet and see if that extra jolt may help.

Just put a 1/2" breaker bar on it, if that wont do it, put a pipe on it.  jack handles are perfect for this.  Break the head off don't grind it off (unless yo have exhausted every other option).  If you round the head, go get a kit from NAPA to remove rounded heads, they bit harder the more you force it.

Take a socket with you to a muffler, tire or oil change shop, beg a little and see if they can just break it loose with their air impact ratchet, snug it back up a little and change out when you get back. Meet nice people on a Honda and make new friends.

I agree, that poor bike probably hasn't seen a new oil filter in years :(.

But I'm glad you got it and now hopefully you'll get the thing finished up.  And you can tell the buyer "oil and filter just changed!"  ;D

Geez, guys...   I've put 6000 miles on this bike in 3 years and change the oil (AND FILTER) every 1500.  In fact...this marks the 6th time I've changed the oil on this bike in that time.

Im not baffled cuz I'm an idiot.   I'm baffled cuz there is no reason this thing should be stuck...cuz I put it on last and didn't put it on that tight.

And when I sell a vehicle, I would always give it to them with fresh oil...and address anything else that needs immediate attention.  I would never let someone take possession of this bike without fixing anything I felt needed immediate attention.  The guy only came to see the bike...he wasn't going to ride it home.

EDIT: There are no metal shavings in the oil.  And (just so you know) the filter was not decayed in anyway.  Not that I expected it to be...

Put some anti-seize under bolt head .
It's possible to get some corrosion between head and the 'O' ring.
It's not much area but can make life difficult

thx!  I'll do that...

anyone have a link to a good "how to" for valve adjustment and timing on this bike.  I searched and there is no concise step by step explanation in the FAQ.
