The Burt Munroe Challenge
« on: November 18, 2011, 09:53:49 AM »
So who is going to this?
Held in the South Island of New Zealand every year in November, a week of bikes bikes and more bikes, races, beach sprints, hill climbs and more bikes.
Even the Aussies come over for it.
Anyone on the site going to it?
Can ya put up some photos for us please.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

most of the movie was true, but a bit of "artistic license" was used. Burt actually went to the flats a few times.

pity I'm not going, sadly have to work. a few mates are heading down tomorrow, if "Bear" manages to work his camera, I will post pics when he gets back next week.

Burt, on his Indian, set in August 67 and still holds the S-F (1000cc) Bonneville land speed record of 183.586 mph.  He also had an unofficial run (officially timed) of 205.67 mph for the flying mile.

What I didn't know about Burt was that he built and raced several other bikes apart from his beloved Indian. He build a drag bike out of a 1936 Velocette 500 single that would do 250 KMH (155.35 MPH) and ridden by Neil Neilson, broke the 500cc land speed record in 1964. A very talented man. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I was just going to add Burt was a Velocette man and in fact used the Velocettes more than he did the Indian for racing.

G'Day Mick, it's still sitting in my cousin's garage gathering dust. Over the last few months he's had a marriage breakup and he's got to sell the family home and pay out his ex-wife half a million bucks, so he's got enough to worry about without me asking him how the "tuning" is going.  ;)

Maybe he should start the bike, grab all the money and head for the longest straightest road available.... ;D :o

Here's some photos of Burt and John Britten that I've shot from a book.
A guy (from NZ who now lives here in Darwin) came into work a while ago and gave me a stack of old motorcycle photos and VHS tapes that were taken in NZ many years ago.
He said that he was having a big cleanout and just didn't want them anymore.

I'd like to digitalize the tapes and get them onto DVD's to preserve them.

If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

Hey Mick, you get all that stuff on a dvd I'd like to buy a copy from you. That would be a great history lesson.

No worries Fred.
I'll get the magic box hooked up between the tape player & the PC and see what's on them.
There's 4 tapes altogether, the rest of the tape boxes were full of old photos.
I don't want anything for the DVD's mate.
Once they're copied onto the HD, it's just a matter of burning a few discs and the jobs right.
I can let you know when I've done ém and we'll sort it out from there.
If I was you
I'd be worried about me.
