Electrical problem: No spark? cl90
« on: October 12, 2011, 06:51:17 AM »
I have a honda cl 90 with no spark :-\. I had another topic introducing the bike and explaining a few details but this one is looking for help specifically on getting a spark. I really want to see this bike running again.

If you have power to the coil, and the points are connected and working, you will have spark.  If not, bad coil.

With the ignition switch on, put a test light on the points arm and rotate the engine.  The light should go on and off at the normal timing position.  It would not hurt to file the points contact surfaces lightly and clean by passing a piece of stiff paper between them.  Also don't neglect the ignition lead as a possibility.  Remove boot by turning counterclockwise, Trim 1/8" off the end and screw it back on will help that.

The arm is the flat piece of metal the acts as a spring, right?

Yes, the other side is grounded with the screws.

Hello,
Do you have power to the points when you check it w/ a test light ?
I hope you have your battery installed by now & it's fully charged.

To test the points you need to set them statically.
Then check the dwell. If the gap is correct and you it started and then the dwell is off you need new points. The reason is the phonelic block on the points that rubs on the cam may be worn down.

The condensers are measured in microfarads and it is stamped on the condensers. Like 22u.
It takes a sophisticated meter to measure them and it is easier to just get new ones.

Also unscrew the spark plug cap from the spark plug wire and cut off about 1/4 inch and screw it back on. Sometimes the end of the wire gets burned.

Put a clamp on DC timing light on the spark plug wire to see if it is getting a spark.
