How low can you go (sprokets/gears)?
« on: October 14, 2011, 05:28:29 am »
I want to get a pretty low gear ratio, I want to top out at 100 mph. What is some of the lowest setups they sell? Where can I find it? What chain would I need?

At a guess you might be looking at 16 front and 60 rear. you might have to buy an after market rear sprocket, try CycleX.
We run 16/ 52 on our drag bike and it still pulls 114 at the end of the quarter.

Thanks Sam, you have been the most helpful with this. I posted something similar on my other thread and everyone keeps on questing why and not giving me any kind of answers.

The other thread has people questioning why because you're wanting to top out at a speed your bike should be able to do in factory trim.  If it's only able to achieve 85mph, then you might want to consider not gearing down any more, and possibly installing larger sprockets.  We're just trying to save you some coin in the long run, and determine if there is a problem with your machine elsewhere.

Putting on a larger sproket is gearing down for low end.

for streetracing once I used 14t to 17t sprokets.
but with small sprokets you are doing no good to the chain and bearing (behind the sproket) as well.

Do you plan to do much riding on freeways and interstates? If so, the 17/60 may be too low. I'm running a 16/48, and cruising at 75 MPH, I found myself looking for 6th gear. A 17/52 would be a tiny bit lower than 16/48. (3.00:1 vs 3.058:1)

Good point...I always recommend a larger rear sprocket. You can also have problems with the swingarm with the smaller countersprocket. With a real large rear sprocket you have limited engagement with the countersprocket. Hmmmm. Always trade offs. I'd say a 3.5:1 ratio is about as high as I would go though I think Frank (754) once ran a 14 front 70 rear.  ???;) ;) ;D

I never ran smaller than 17 on the front if I remeber correctly.. I have a 16 from a KO but hesitate to use it if running it hard.
How big can you go probablyat least 80 if not 100.
Dont know why you have 2 threads, told you right off the bat in the  other , it uses same chain, only longer and there are many suppliers, just search on your computer.
Failing all that you can go to a bearing or power transmission place, oerder a blank in any size you desire, bore the center, and drill the 4 holes to mount it. When you go real big though you may want aluminum, its a 1/3 the weight of steel.

The only reason I'm running a 16 is I couldn't find my 17, and I had to have the bike ready for the relay. I think a pack-rat made off with the 17. >:(
