Hello from North VA!
« on: November 10, 2011, 06:26:25 PM »
I am a complete motorcycle noob.  I am taking the beginner bike course and getting my license in a few weeks.

I have been researching a reasonably priced first bike and liked the SV650s.  I couldn't quite put my finger on why I liked them until I very randomly stumbled across pictures of the cafe racer style of bikes.  Watched a doc about Ace Cafe (I think it was called that).  I fell in love with the style of bike.  So it might be a huge stretch but the SV650 was the first breadcrumb that got me here.

I did some more digging and it seemed 70s era of CB bikes could be turned into really incredible cafe racers.  It also seems across the board that a good condition running bike is very much in my price range of 3k.  So here I am.  Right now I have my eyes set on a CB500.  It seems a very manageable first bike... but what do I know?  Not sure if I want one close to stock or already modified into the "cafe racer" style.

Just cruising the forums and I saw Dirk D's 71 CB500.  That is just about exactly what I inspire to have eventually.

Well, there it is!  I hope to stick around and absorb as much knowledge as possible.

Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome!  I have to say, you guys here are a lot more friendly than some of the other forums out there.  Glad to see you welcome the clueless noobs.  I will do my best to not be the guy that doesn't use the search function ;).

Thanks again!

I am in Leesburg, so very close.  Glad to hear there is a source near by.

I actually have a question for you.  I found a couple places that offer the basic training course in the area... but during Dec... that seems a bit strange to risk snow on the ground for a beginner motorcycle training class.  Most close down in Nov and open enrollment in Feb-March.  Either way, you have any recommendations of places to take the class in the area?

Nova is the cheapest, Apex is really good but a little more $.
