Badly scratched chain guard. How can I buff out or restore?

Not sure, but something to look into...They used to sell plastic re-newing kits for motocross bikes...cleaner and a coating that you spread around and then buff..

I can tell you what not to do. I tried buffing it out with white polishing compound on a buffing wheel attached to my bench grinder-  the same technique I have used with great success to polish my aluminum parts. Came out nice and smoothe and shiny, but the heat generated seemed to produce a delayed reaction that bleached a lot of the black color out of the plastic in irregular blotches. I ended up going on E-bay and getting one off a parted out bike that is in decent shape.

Any time I tried to buff out scratches in the plastic parts I seemed to make it worse. Back To Black by Mother's I think will make it look better though.

The question is how deep and bad are the scratches?
