Another one - '76 CJ360T - Is it time for an intervention?

CL strikes again - I just couldn't stop myself today...  maybe it's time for an intervention! ::)

1976 CJ360T, the "decontented" Honda 360.
No electric start, drum front, 5-spd.
It runs, everything works, doesn't sound too bad, not too much rust on anything important, and the exhaust pipe is a very solid, slightly dented original replacement.
It came with some miscellaneous spare parts including a set of jugs. (I wonder why...)
It's been repainted, the side covers should be black.
Seems to have about ~20K miles on it.


The story was the owners father was restoring it and he passed away so it sat in the garage for the last five years.
The owner said he got a about 10 calls from people who wanted to "cafe" it but he sold it to me because I said I was interested in keeping it stock. :)   

I've been looking for just this exact bike.
A friend of mine had one back in the '70's and I always liked the look, kinda like a junior "F" bike.

And it came with a couple of "mascots" -one on each side.  ;D

The CJ's are hard to find.   Most people never heard of them.  Lots of little diffs from the CB/CL ones.    Looks like a good start.

Yeah, and because they didn't make many there doesn't appear to be lot of info specific to the CJ out there.
As far as I can tell they only made ~13500  '76 models and ~3500 '77's.
No wonder they were discontinued.

So far the only thing I find missing/wrong is the shift lever isn't stock, the chain guard is gone, and the seat strap is missing.
(and of course the side covers being the wrong color.)
At least that's all I can see.
The PO replaced the muffler and the tail piece, two of the rarer, more pricey items to find intact.

What's up with the three holes in the right side of the front fender? No holes on the left side.
I thought someone had drilled them for some reason but I see on other CJ's that they too have the holes. Weird.

And I can already see that finding air filters is going to cost me.. ::)

Always thought it funny for a "economy" bike to have so many diffrent parts.  Especially the 2-1 exhaust and the tail.  On my CB I just used pods.  Keep it quiet or well start a pod fight. ;D
Had to move the battery around but it is way more open without the big a$$ed air boxes.

That is a real good bike for solid & basic transportation...it sure is good for the gas crunch prices !

The three holes are for a rubbing pad for speedo cable/brake hose.
The airbox covers do double duty as side covers so are easily painted to match tank (stock is usually black with CJ***T in yellow, gold, white (or combinations)
 I like them, even with the top end oiling issues (not a problem if you don't hold it at high rpm)
 Use Rotella 5w/40 full synthetic, works well for me in 378cc motors
 I can modify carbs so they work with pods, but, that's a nice one, keep it pretty stock it will run fine
Couple of things I would do though, get bars off European model (or 400F 'Euro' bars)
 European models never came with drum brake, even the CJ250 had disc .

 It was 'turned upside down' at about 50~60mph by my sisters (EX) husband so pretty tore up when I got it
 He knew she was a better rider than him (which is why she rode the Z1B  ;D)

Ah, yes, I see the long-discontinued fender pad in the parts list.  I guess I need three of part #21 too.  ;D ::)
Yeah, changing the bars is the only change I was considering.

I'm going to repaint the side covers, the crappy paint job is already peeling at the edges. New decals are easy to get.
The air boxes look pretty good, the rubber is in pretty good shape and for some reason the bike came with a pair of spare boxes.

I might just get the tank and fenders repainted too.
The tank decals are bubbling under the paint and there's a small dent, plus the paint job just isn't that good.
The tail piece still has original paint on it.
I found out the bike was drunkenly parked too close to a bonfire and the original tailpiece, gauges, tail light, and blinkers melted slightly and were replaced by the PO.  I have the melted gauges and taillight.
Anyway, I'll start in on it after I finish the XL250s which is already presenting me with its own set of expenses! ::)
