That was a tough choice, I REALLY like what bob has done with the 550, being turbocharged and everything.....but the mustard color and it's predominence in the color scheme was just too much for me. I noticed some fine details on dakota's bike.....like a modern swingarm and nicely done rearsets, and that tank/seat combo is fantastic!

First off let me say that I'm truly honored to be included with all the great bikes that have been nominated for BOTM.
My project started with a part rather than a bike. I bought a new turbo kit from American Turbo Pak in 1972. I used that kit on three different bikes in the "70s and then put it into storage after taking it off the last one. It stayed in a box for about 30 years until March of this year.
This is the kit when I took it out of storage.

I found this bike for $250. Not real pretty but seemed decent mechanically.

The carburetors on this bike were completely plugged and since I wasn't going to use them anyway I mounted the turbo kit to the bike before doing any dis-assembly just to see what shape the engine might be in. Happily it ran fine on all four and had all five gears still in the transmission.

From there it was dis-assemble, clean, paint and polish everything.

I left the 16" rear rim that the PO had installed but I had to paint the rims as they were both rusted. I also re-laced both wheels with new spokes.

After the chassis parts were all cleaned and painted it was re-assembled.

I like the style of the flat track seat so that is what I used. I had to split it and widen it to fit my frame.

The tank, seat, side covers and front fender I painted white with a yellow racing stripe for contrast.  The masking tape I used bled through on the edges so I had a friend
color sand and buff and then I had the edges pinstriped lime green.

All in all it's been a fun project and I'm pleased with the results if I do say so myself.

 Thanks again for the nomination.
Bob

Well here is my story.
First off all I am truly honored to be nominated for BOTM.
Because I am Britbiker I also loved the Norton Manx, but as you, it's very difficult and expensive to find a Norton Manx.
So I decided to make a Manx (replica) bike. I wanted something classic and I started to google around.
I discovered the Honda CB750 F2 (with 71856kms), this was a good stock CB750 project bike, the bike was stalled for about 10 years.
But the good thing was, it came with a lot of spares: a second engine, 4 wheels, 6 carbs, 3 tanks....

This was the start of a new project, it was the first time for me to handle a Honda, but luckily there was this forum.
First I have read a lot of topics in the Project Shop and Questions Forums, so now I could make an inventory of the parts that has to be replaced.
Thanx to some chats with Voxonda, I knew wich were the weak parts of the F2.

Time to put the bike in to pieces.
The engine was completely stripped, cleaned all the muck off it and assessed what is worn out and what can be reused.
For an F2 the problem usually seems to be the valves, cam, and rockers, fortunately mine are reusable, (also the parts of the spare engine are reusable)
and the bottom end of the engine is really good. The cilinders are a bit rusty, and the rings worn.

-frame blasted and powdercoated
-engine degreased, blasted
-replaced all seals, orings
-balanced the crank
-new shells for crankcase
-camchain and primary chain are replaced
-new front sprocket
-new manx gastank from http://www.tabclassics.com
-new wideline manx seat from http://www.wbo-racing.de
-new bearings for the wheels
-painted comstars
-taper roller bearings for steering
-new piston & seal kit for rearbrake
-double piston front brakes from a honda cb750 1980 rc04
-velocity stacks from http://www.steeldragonperformance.com
-the famous framekit from http://www.voxonda.com
-adjustable camshaft cam sprocket from APE
-dresda swingarm from http://www.krueger-junginger.de
-replaced the complete transmission with these from the spare engine
-homemade manx oiltank
-rebuild of the tacho and speedo
-rearsets from ebay and homemade brackets
-rectifier/regulator RR24 from http://www.electrexworld.co.uk
-rear shocks from YSS
-rebuild of the carbs

So after 2 years the bike is running, it needs still some tuning but the bike rides very good.
Some jobs for the winter:
- replacing the points with an electronic ignition, http://doc.honda4.nl/elz2coil/elz2coil.html
- for Christmas a webcam 41 camshaft

Enjoy the pictures.

Both cool bikes, but does the turbo just seems like a broiler oven between your legs?  Traffic and sunshine and 107' f.

I know they can boil batteries.

But for cooler climes, or seasonally I can see where it may be an advantage.

Tough decision! I like both bikes equally, both demonstrate good build quality, some very unique parts and good craftsmanship.
I have to go with Bob's bike just because that turbo is uber cool and, very interesting. Once again both bikes are great I would be happy to own either. Well done to both owners for a good quality build.

I love both bikes. I love dakota's Manx look, but I also love Bob's turbo and the back story. The deal breaker for me, fickle as it may be, is that Bob is in Lompoc, where I was born. :-[

Lompoc is also home to Vandenberg AFB, besides the federal minimum security prison. The cold war, and the space race drew many people to the area in the '50s and '60s.
