Nick in new piston ring
« on: October 17, 2011, 03:58:39 PM »
In the processor of installing my new piston rings I have noticed that there is a nick in the edge of one of the oil control rings.  It doesnt stick out, but it is large enough to catch my finger nail.

Since this ring doesnt really press that much on the walls I figured it wasnt really a big deal.

Any thoughts?

That would require a good close up photo.

For the price charged for rings for our bikes, I'd insist on a replacement.

Hey q ; Absolutely BIG plus 1 on getting a replacement !!! You bought a new set of rings and that one is DEFECTIVE ! I could probably give you 3 or 4 reasons why but "THINK" about it, your building a new motor, how soon do you want to tear it back down ?? Send or take it back and if you need to Demand a new one !   ...cougar...

An abrupt nick like that is asking for a cracked ring soon after installing and running.  Its called a stress riser and those rings are brittle enough to fail in short order.  Replace, no worries.

Well the nick isnt really on the edge, its actually on the top, you cant see it if you turn the ring upside down.  So it probably wouldnt even make contact with the wall.  But I guess it would probably accumulate heat...  humbug

Top and bottom are even worse for stress cracks as the ring moves up and down in the bore.  We're not talking a slight compression loss or mild oil usage here.  A broken ring can depart the groove and jam between the piston and cylinder.

Well, no point in debating whether a nick on the top or the side is worse, because it turns out there is one on the top and on the side...  The one on the side is bad, its about half the depth of the chrome-ish looking ring section.

I just sent an e-mail about getting a replacement.  Hopefully they warranty them, which they should.  Otherwise its $22 for another set, not really a big deal.
