having some issues with the carbs. perhaps im an idiot, as well as ive never dealt with these "pd" nightmares before.
this is whats stamped on the carbs:

is it these late model 77/78 pd carbs use their own style jets? they dont seem to look like the other keihin screw in jets, and i dont see a place for a press in o-ring jet to go either. i ordered 115's and 120's from dime city before i had opened the carbs to see these funny jets. the jets dime city sells that say they will fit up to 78' are the o-ring press in ones. (thats whats pictured under the listing, i havnt received them yet) here is the 90 jet that came out of my right side carb.

i thought perhaps the jet screws into the emulsion tube, but they dont budge, which at the time lead me to think its one piece. perhaps mine are really seized togeather? i put the 7mm on the emulsion tube and tried to twist the jet off with a flat head as well as pliers and nothing. can someone school me on these carbs as far as jetting, and where to get jets from that fit? the bike is a 78 and has the pd carbs on it. the bike has uni pods and a mac 4-1 with "race" baffle.(pretty free flowing) here some photos of whats inside the float bowl.

The jet in your hand in the main 90 jet. The slow I is the one that presses in if I am thinking correctly. I had to clean my carbs 78 550 pds the week prior and it looked the same.

It has been about a year since i rebuilt mine on my 750, but I am pretty sure they the same and are 2 pieces.  Yours are just super stuck.

Also be sure to pull out the pressed in idle jet with a bit of leather and some pliers.  They are usually clogged if the bike has been sitting a while and the only way to really get them clean is to pull then and stick a small wire through them.  Just be careful not to make the holes larger.  If you do a search the process has been gone over a few times.

Good luck!

yes those tips come off, run those throught a ultra sonic cleaner. should help out a bit.
AND make sure you haven't lost the needle jet.  it sits on top of the emulsion tube. about a 1/4" long. you can see the tip of it in side the carb when you lift the slide. i was missing 2 and for a long time couldn't figure out why my bike was not willing to run.
checked the timing like 5 million times
new ingnition nope
checked the valves nope
checked the compression nope
checked the charge nope
cleaned the carbs...... hey why is there only 2 of these thingys.....

just a thought. and these are only on the 77 and 78 carbs.

Is your motion pro throttle a 1/4 turn quick throttle or is the stock turn ratio? The PD carbs on the 77/78 are harder to work on than the earlier style. They are the lean burn emission carbs and are harder to access the jet needle (to raise a notch to richen mid range) You pretty much need to disassemble the carb rack to access the needle jet! With uni pods on my 550 and running a 650 cam with 590cc kit I needed to raise needle up a notch for mid range, go to a 110main jet and increase slow jet to a #44.

it seems as if i have left this bike in time out for long enough. yesterday i tore it all apart and pulled the motor out of it as well as the other 550 parts bike i got with it. the motor thats going in the bike didnt have any signs of oil weepage or really any oil leaks i could see, as well as had the kickstarter in place. (P.O. snapped the shaft at the side cover) i removed the valve cover to check the valves and slack on the tc, and everything looks pretty good. put the vc back on, adjusted the valves and gave the motor a few coats of vht semi-gloss black. once that had dried, i installed as much of the stainless fastener kit as i could, as im not puting on a few covers until the motor is back in the frame. photos.

since my buddy couldnt make it tonight to help me install the motor, i figured id rebuild the forks. while they were apart i polished the legs and the top caps. nothing like chrome, but a hell of alot better than the crusty, pitted barnacles i had before.
before:

after:

and togeather.

sorry for the #$%*ty photos. the forks are much shinier in person. the lighting in my shop doesnt get along too well with my iphones camera. ill get some better ones when the bikes back togeather.

tires came in today so i got those mounted up and back on the bike. its nice to have it resemble something again.

.

.
also took apart the front caliper and spent some time cleaning it inside and out. the piston and seal seam to be in good shape. gave them a quick zip on the wheel and some fresh black paint.

my new jets arrived today as well, so im hoping my buddy will have a free minute tomorrow to let me come finish cleaning them (he lets me use his ultrasonic cleaner) and then reassemble them for hopefully the last time. fingers crossed.

took em back to my shop and slapped em on the bike. i was having issues getting the bike going, but after taking my petcock out of the tank and giving it a good cleaning, she awoke! THIS DAMN BIKE RUNS!! (and strong too) i cant express how excited i am having it running and stopping under its own power. i took it out for a little test run tonight and she powers through all the gears great as well as cruises very smoothly. so pumped. heres some more #$%*ty photos of the final product.

Nice find. I have the same bike. Whats your goals with this build? I also Pm'ed you...

Probably just a yellow tint film applied on the stocker, you can find it lots of places.  It goes on just like window tint for cars.

its is the stock bucket with some h4 conversion reflector that came in a box with the bike. in the picture i was using film (like "laminx") but since then i have removed the film and sprayed the glass with krylon stained glass paint. it looks alot better in person, and the light output is much better. the film seemed to restrict some of the light.

Andrew, I got to say that the paint scheme, using the original paint and brown seat looks great.  The first time I've seen someone use the original on a cafe build and it looks perfect.  That is an F right?  They have the right decals for this.  I'm sure that there are a lot more out there, I just haven't noticed.  I'm going to try the appliance paint on something BTW.

One thought; people go to a lot of trouble getting rid of all of the electrics, air box and side covers to leave that space open.  But sometimes it looks like there needs to be something there.  Just me.

I see Stevo mentioned the B word.  Great job.
