Tappet Adjustment has be Baffled!??!
« on: October 15, 2011, 05:22:57 PM »
I have a 76 CB750F and I am reassembling the engine.  I have read the manual and have adjusted valves about 100 times on other bikes (mostly v-twins and singles) but this one has me a little confused.  I am at TDCC on #1, cam looks to be on the base circle and all the timing marks match.  My understanding is that I should be able to adjust #2 Exhaust and #3 intake in this position.  However, both rockers are already ramping up on the cam.  There is no lash on these in this position.  What am I missing??
Thanks in Advance,
Chris

do them one by one watching the valves cycle and close, then bring the tdc mark up,this will also confirm you cam is installed correctly.

If #1 is truly TDCC, then yes #2EX and #3IN are adjustable at that point.

So something is wrong. Stand back and come at it again.

At that same setting check #4/ #3ex and #2IN. ITs either one or the other.

The Cam install matches the pics in the manual, the tach gear drive is on #4 and the cut out on the end is on the same side as the points cover.  I have it set where the cam end cut out is at the top of the bearing cap and the "T"of 1.4 are lines up.  Does this mean that #1 is TDCC or #4 is TDCC?  I think this may be the issue.  Thanks

I had the same problem when trying to use the shop manual to adjust the valves. There are better instructions out there to adjust them. Like so:
http://www.salocal.com/sohc/tech/vlvadj/vlv.htm

Funny, I'm actually about to rewrite this very same valve adjustment procedure (the one in the manual) for a Technical Writing class  ;D
Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems.

The way to determine TDCC is to rotate the engine forward. Watch for the intake valve of #1 to go down (open). Then watch it come back up (close). As soon as it stops moving up, look in your timing window for 1-4T. At that point you are TDCC #1.

Set #1 TDCC as explained above. Set 1ex and In, 2EX and 3IN. Turn 360 deg, set the other 4 and you're done. Eazy peazy.   :D

A 4 cylinder in-line engine is always the same. Never mind the TDC #$%*. 1 & 4 go up and down together. 2 & 3 go up and down together. As an example, take 1 & 4. When 1 intake is all the way open, 4 intake is all the way closed. Adjust 4 intake. So take off all the tappet covers. Pull the plugs for ease of turning. Slooooooowly turn the engine  and stop when a valve is all the way open. Adjust its mate at that point. Nothing to remember other than 1 & 4 are mates - 2 & 3 are mates. 3 exhaust all the way open? adjust 2 exhaust. etc.
