is this rim too far gone?
« on: May 15, 2006, 10:42:27 PM »
One of the rims I grabbed from the boneyard had a tire on it which was hiding some pretty ugly rust.  I took a wire wheel to it and cleaned up most of the red surface rust, but before I go through the trouble of relacing this thing on a hub, I wanted to get other opinions.  Is this rim junk or salvagable?  It feels pretty solid, i tried to get a feel for any thinning spots near spoke holes and  there doesn't seem to be any.

PS. I plan on painting this rim, if that is a factor.

Paint the inside with one of the rust killing paints and let it dry out thoroughly. It should then be OK to use.

That's what I did, it will be interesting to see how it holds up. However, recently a member suggested zinc chromate primer instead as it actually binds with the rust. Never tried it, but thought I would mention it.

I would say use the POR 15 as your primer and go from there. If the metal is solid, and you plan to paint it anyway, your biggest priority is to stop any more rust from developing.

K, thanks guys.  Looks like I'll just clean it up well and use it.  I saw the earlier thread mentioning the zinc chromate.  I think I'll hunt around for some of that.

Zinc Cromate primer.....Try the Airport...If your local Aiplane folks have a parts counter.

ZC is pretty scratchable...I sprayed a rim like yours with it then epoxy primed it.

You can get Epoxy primer with Zinc cromate in it already though......

Shame you can't tape it off and throw it in a bead blaster to clean it up.
