Today I installed the new front Conti on the rim. Drained the forks and removed the clearcoat with Aircraft Stripper. Took the forks off and will now polish the legs and rebuild them. Hope those dang seals come out easier than the K4's did. Making progress...

First thing I did was remove those handlebar extenders and put the bars back to OEM. Then gave it a first cleaning to see what I had under the dust and dirt. It did reveal nice original paint with some minor scratches on the tank that I will try to buff out. Even with 5,310 miles I would expect a scratch here and there, but to have this OEM paint with no fade is remarkable. Want to be real careful before I turn it over to check compression and don't want to mark the cylinder walls. I thought maybe some Sea Foam or some oil down the cylinders to be safe. What do you guys recommend for the first start up beside oil and filter change to protect the internals after 20+ years of sitting. I usually squirt about a quart of the oil through the valve adjuster ports.

"I usually squirt about a quart of the oil through the valve adjuster ports."

That oil would just drain back to the crankcase and then the crankcase would be over filled. If you started it, the oil tank could overflow.  That would then require draining some or all of the oil and starting over.
The CB750 is a dry sump system.

Hey johnie, thanks for the one pic of the front end off the bike. I will use that method this week. Has the engine been replaced or removed before? I noticed on the pic, the right bolt is pretty long, much longer then the left side.

In regard to your fender, how did you clean it up so well? Any pitting?

Great work and I keep looking for updates.

Nice build...
So you are building your bike in your family room? I hope you are...
Its cold outside!  0º in Milwaukee the last couple of days!
I heat my garage all winter to about 55º just because I am a wimp and don't like the cold. Can't wait to buy the place in Arizona or Florida and be a snow bird!

Hey Tews...did not even notice that bolt. Not sure what the deal is on that. For sure shorter on my other bikes. Motor has never been removed per the original owner and should not have been removed with only 5,310 miles on it. I have a correct bolt here from a parts bike that I will replace it with. Funny I never noticed that in the pic and glad you brought it to my attention. Regarding that front fender, no pitting or dents. Cleaned up so nice with soap, water, soft cloth. Then used Semi-Chrome on it. That is what is so amazing on this bike is there is very little oxidation, rust or abuse. Wait until you see the OEM paint on the tank and side covers...remarkable.

Sixthwisconsin...I am doing the work in a heated sun room compliments of my supportive wife. ;)  She would kill me if I did the work in a cold garage where she could not polish some chrome once and a while.

Got the forks off and cleaned. The seals came out pretty easy. I find it a bit strange how the left fork leg was like new and the right one had a fair amount of oxidation (pic). Makes no difference as they will both be polished up anyway.

I bet the oxidation is from how the front wheel was turned to the left when the side kickstand was down.

BJ you may have something there. He had taken the center stand off so he could put on a MAC 4 into 1 exhaust.

If you dont want that long bolt Id take it off your hands Johnie. It looks a lot easier to get that nut on it with the longer bolt.

Well, I am not a fan of aluminim polishing...but the time and effort is worth the end result. Here is the before and after of the fork legs and chain cover. Used what I always do...red, green and white rouge. Now to get the fork seals in and back on the bike. Polishing those side covers will be done outside. After the mess I made in the patio polishing the K1 side covers...well, I found out the establishment frowns upon that sort of thing.  :D

Looks really good. What do you use to polish? I have 3 different wheels for 3 compounds. When I get some more I pick you one up and send it to you... Call it an xmas present

Very satisfied with how my exhaust clamps turned out. Did not use chemicals...just the wire wheel. Still missing 2 of the exhaust spigots the PO promised. Might have to locate 2 of those.

Thanks hall...these forks were the best so far regarding no dings or stone chips. They turned out real nice. Now comes some piddly stuff like checking the foot peg steel for paint, cleaning up some bolts, etc. You know the routine... ;D But that is what we enjoy, aye???

I hope you don't mind that I leave a comment for every post you make but damn. The forks and front fender look like showroom. I thought the chrome had some pitting or at least a little rust???????????????  I am pretty sure you could beat out the 74 that sold for 15k on Ebay...  Now the big question, would you sell it once all complete???? 15K!

Tews I enjoy your comments and they are encouraging and appreciated. Makes all the details worth it, so thanks. I am amazed at how nice the front fender turned out. It is original and I did not chrome it. You just need to be very gentle when removing the years of dirt. Same deal with the tank. I was so careful to not to let the dirt act as sandpaper when removing it. The front rim is just as nice. Would I sell it once done you ask? I did see that K4 that sold for $15K which was pretty amazing. I am actually planning to add this K3 to my collection.
