You know how there is always that old Honda in a barn or shed somewhere that you here stories about, but it always eludes you. Your friend tells you about it, but can not produce pics. Finally you buy something else, but this old Honda in a shed still sticks in the back of your mind. You keep wondering if it is a true story or a hoax. You can never clear it from your mind and you continue to wonder about it. Well, that is my scenario which has been playing out for 3 years now. I heard about this CB750K3 from a friend and it was owned by his brother some 4 hours away. For one reason or another I could not get any movement or pics of the bike. Then I lost close contact with the friend, but would occasionally bug him about it. Then 3 years later I get an E mail from my friend with pics of the K3 on a trailer saying, "look what I got." I guess his brother asked him to take it out of his garage for some room. The brother had some offers on the bike, but he did not want to see it riding around his hometown. My friend showed him some pics of what I try to do with these bikes bringing them back to OEM and he was all for it. So Monday all went well...meaning I brought the K3 home. Has a build date of 10/72 with last license sticker of 1987. One owner candy bucchus olive with 5,310 miles, tool kit, owners manual, title and original sales receipt of $1,579. Purchased May 31, 1973. Spent time cleaning it up last night and the paint is awesome with no fading. Tank decals are great. No dents. Side covers are perfect with good paint, no scratches, no cracks. Will need to add one orange diamond under the left side cover badge. This is the cleanest tank interior I have ever seen with no rust. Carb bowls have some stinky gas and are dirty so I will go through the carbs. Front brake and caliper will need to be rebuilt. The MAC exhaust is in very good condition and I may sell it to put some $$$ towards the 341's, but that will be next year. Seat is very good with no tears and no rust on the pan. Put a battery in and all electrical works good. Motor is free and starter is fine. Here are some pics just how I found it...minus the padded sissy bar I took off for the trip home. The guy has the center stand to send me yet. He is also going to look for the exhaust flanges and interior flanges he took off. I hope he can find those. The owner knew I would not pay a lot since restore is so costly with the exhaust, so he gave it to me for $700. I was glad to see the chrome will clean up good and there are no fender dents. Rims look good and it still has the OEM tires on which I will replace. I will know more once I get a chance to get into the motor with compression, etc. This will be my winter project and I plan to keep it stock. So finally a good ending to the phantom K3 that would not leave the recesses of my mind. It will be good to see this bike hit the sunshine again.

First thing I did was remove those handlebar extenders and put the bars back to OEM. Then gave it a first cleaning to see what I had under the dust and dirt. It did reveal nice original paint with some minor scratches on the tank that I will try to buff out. Even with 5,310 miles I would expect a scratch here and there, but to have this OEM paint with no fade is remarkable. Want to be real careful before I turn it over to check compression and don't want to mark the cylinder walls. I thought maybe some Sea Foam or some oil down the cylinders to be safe. What do you guys recommend for the first start up beside oil and filter change to protect the internals after 20+ years of sitting. I usually squirt about a quart of the oil through the valve adjuster ports.

About time you started a proper project thread for one of your bikes. I can't wait to stop by sometime and see it.

Nice score!
I'm kindof partial to the K3's myself!
What did the old oil look like in the bike?
I think your plan to add oil to the oil/cylinders/valves for initial startup is a
solid idea.
Very nice looking bike as it sits, should compliment your "herd' of CB's nicely  ;)

I think a lot of barn "finds" could be a son who was killed in the military.

There is a great song on the radio (even if you don't like country music), now about a soldier that leaves a corvette in a barn and his mother finally sells it but only advertises it as a chevy.

Private something...hold on.

Thanks Johnie, that's one thing I really like is seeing pictures of other members sohc4's that they recused and brought home. A 38 year old K3 with 5300 miles and for only $700 ain't nothing wrong with that. Goes to show you these bikes and the deals are differently still out there!! Congrads Johnie 8)

Thanks much guys. More pics as we move on the project. I do plan to get some pics of the collection with the bikes together next spring/summer. I agree with you dhall & Andy that I like to see the pics of what the guys are working on too. Just fun to see what is out there and what we are bringing home. Something about the 750 just has me locked in to it. I bought and sold 6 Honda's this summer (not 750's) and did not feel an attachment to any of them. But the 750 is a different story. Must be the styling and the image I recall the bike had when I was a lad in my teens and twenties. Just something about them that make it hard to part with one.

That's really nice.  It would be worth investing in some new HM341's for that.
With prices the way they are do you think one could recoup the cost of the bike and the 341'S plus some profit?

I sure would consider it, factory pipes just add to the value of the bike. I'm sure your looking at $1000 or more for new 341's and hardware (OUCH) but you got such a deal on the K3 I don't see how you could go wrong by doing this. And just like a factory seat the factory pipes add so much to the look of these 750's. Is that a Mac pipe on it now? Good or bad shape? If your like me Johnie I just don't like having the left side of bike bare with no pipe. Im a big fan of the stock factory bike and even though these 750's are 40 years old when in all stock trim there still some of the best looking bikes on the hwy. I had planned on getting a new set of 341's
for my K6 this year and get rid of the Mac 4 to 1, but has you know a KO found it's way to my house in May so that put the 341's on the back burner. Still have the original 300's on the KO but are only in fair shape with some JB patch work in places. Don't know how much longer they will last. The decision is now which bike do I buy new pipes for the KO or k6 :-\ :-\

Definitely.   You can get a brand new set of HM341's with baffles and shipping for about $1100.
I just sold a 75 with 13k that isn't nearly as nice as yours for $3900.   I'd guess that one would easily fetch 4-5k or more on ebay.

I'll PM you a guys email address that deals in Honda parts.  He has great prices and you don't have the upcharges that ebay has.    He's recently quoted me $1130 for smome HM300's w/ baffles, insurance and shipping.  HM300s would also be fine on there - usually the HM315's are about $100-200 bucks cheaper per set.

Great find.

Well, so there you have it...HM341's will be installed this winter or spring. I thought I may out price the bike, but you convinced me otherwise. And I am not a fan of the bare left side the MAC leaves on this K3. Plus, with the condition this bike is in it is a true candidate for the 341's. Any idea what a fair price is for a very good MAC system complete with good chrome and no holes?

It deserves some new bling.   Heck, I'd offer to double your buying price....as is - you wouldn't even have to buy the pipes.  ;D
