Deer Season 2011/12 Whats going on in your neck of the woods?
« on: August 14, 2011, 08:44:02 PM »
Starts here when the sun comes up(8/15).. and ends Jan 1st. I have never taken one in velvet. That is my goal! Heres a nice pic a few weeks ago. The deer here can have 10 pts and weigh 125 lbs! They dont need the fat for winter. Luckily we can shoot as many antlered deer a day as we like.  Only 2 does a day on the weekends from 9/15 on.

There was a doe next to the garage this morning. We startled the crap out of each other on my way to the shop.

One of these years I might just have to get a big ol' freezer. oh yeah, maybe a tag for around here.

or just use one of those 60gr Partitions and let the neighbors think I popped a chuck.

Don't know about the deer, but gator season opens here today (8/15/11)! Opening week won't happen for me until Labor Day weekend, I believe this is my 12th season stalking toothy lizards through the swamp!

Moments ago there were three pretty good sized bucks (for Texas) about thirty feet from the back porch!

They're chasing the two does that have taken up residence in yard thanks to the drought.
The does will eat from my hand.
They spooked when I got up to take the picture so the photo sucks.  I guess I should set up the wildlife cam again.
Last night I went out to turn off the sprinkler and there was a skunk, a grey fox, and about six deer out in the yard.

Actually the deer in this part of Texas are kinda small.  However, yeah, I kinda said whoa when I saw those guys!
There's no hunting allowed in this area so the bucks have a chance to get a little bigger around here.

I'm getting ready for Moose season here.  Starts Sept. 1st and ends the 20th (they extended it an extra 5 days this years).  I'm psyched!  Have already been getting moose camp setup/ready.  Should be fun!

Dangit! I just bought a brand new Bear Strike this past spring to use this season but I'm not sure if I'll have time to get out. I'm from Missouri where the hunting regulations and permits are less confusing then the process here in Colorado. I missed the application for the draw back in April but I believe they still have OTC throughout but for only specific areas (most of which are far away). One of my coworkers owns a ranch down south so I'm hoping I can get on his property sometime this winter.

I was in high hopes to hunt this year. I haven't drawn a bow in 4 years. I haven't dropped a deer in almost 5 years. Damn I miss being in the tree stand!

Front yard, about 15 minutes ago.  He asked me if I'd seen any does. :)

This was a nice one a guy in my party got in 2010. Have not seen much this year here in WI, but we got a bit of a wait for the rut. A few more weeks and they will be more active. A few bow hunting friends say the woods have been very quiet. Our 10 day gun season starts Nov. 19th this year. My son and I are anxiously waiting. The last pic is my sons 9 point in 2010 and his first buck. Needless to say he was pretty pumped...

Well, with the 5 inches of snow we have on the ground now it should be easier for hunters here in Vermont.

M/L season started in NH today. I grew up on the NH/VT border. Did it start In VT also?  20+ years ago VT landowners got to take an extra doe during rifle season. Is that still true?

One just took out two riders on our Sunday group ride in Austin. 11 O'clock in the morning amidst medium traffic in close proximity to downtown. The owner of the MC shop I work at is at the trauma hospital with a broken pelvis. He was in full leathers when he hit the buck at 55mph. Crazy thing, no abrasions on the leathers. He essentially landed right where he hit the deer. Like a brick wall! Hence the broken-in-four-places pelvis. Mating season makes them do some crazy things.

I met a deer yesterday.    He was in the middle of a field, road was empty, nobody in sight and still he decided to run for it and cross right in front of me.

Luckily I know their idiotic behavior and I was almost stopped when he crossed the road.
