Looking very good, I'm watching with a lot of interest.

The exposed hoop on the seat bump is a really cool touch.

Did the motor ever go back together?  Can't wait to see how that 915cc kit works in a 550  :o :o

Engine is next in line to get butchered  :)
Frame and parts of to powdercoat , seat of to upholstery , frontend being fabed in Michigan ( will pick that up in late january along with the rearsets) , tank and cauling just need finishing before paint , so all in all its moving according to plan .
I think i will start putting stuff back  together in the beginning of February, as I'm of for a vacation in last half of January .
To be honest I'm not entirely sure if i will go with the 915 or settle for a 836 kit , i have a 836 on hand for cheap , but ...........

I'm very excited to see what happens with the motor build.  Are you planning to do anything to help keep that bigger engine cool?  Maybe add an oil cooler or something?

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Ok , so the status on the motor is like this :
Top half of the case , cylinders and liners are at my machine guy , he will do the work ( i hope ) while I'm on vacation in LA for a few weeks  8)
I got the pistons , decided to be chicken after all , it will only be a 740 cc , i had to put up another 600 usd to get the 915 kit , and its just not there right now   :'(  that means 65 mm bore for now .
Ordered the custom  head gasket from cometic ( 50usd) and a gasket set of ebay .
The rest of the engine is apart and cleaned , debating if it should be powdercoated or just painted , i will beadblast it next week anyway , so well see .
Oilcooler , hmmm im thinking about it , to my benefit is my location , its not like we usually hit 80 , its more like in the 70s in summer , but i have not decided yet , whats your thoughts on this guys ?

I'd plan on using an oil cooler. Maybe you could run an inline thermostat if you are worried about over cooling. Itd just suck to melt a motor with that much work gone into it.

I'm with Blackandsilver. It's best to play it safe on a pricey build.

However, I'd suggest forgoing the oil cooler and then in the off chance you melt the motor-it's time for the 915 kit!

Serious note though, go for the cooler route. Sure it doesn't get that hot, but it only takes one day at one slow traffic line because of one big ass wreck or something during a heat wave from nowhere. Just get a small one and throw it above your rear tire or something =D

Just an FYI; If you decide to go with an oil cooler, you can modify one from a 650 to fit and it makes for a nice clean look.

'83-'85 cb650 had those. I have read that the adapter plate would not work on the '79-'82 650s though because of the part on the case where the oil bolt threads in being made differently. I'm not sure if you could just bolt it on to a 550 engine or if it could be modified to work properly.

The mods required were actually to the motor; I needed to cut about 12mm off the large threaded boss sticking out of the oil filter mount, as well as some creative trimming of the fins on the case for clearance of the oil tubes.
