Last layer of fiberglass is on the tank  ;D
I have been sanding down the bumps every two layers ( i now have six ) to avoid getting a major problem in the end , seems to work quite well , before the last layer the tank felt reasonably smooth , so i don't think i will need very much bondo , fingers crossed .
The petcock bunge is in place , i used the old one witch i cut out , sanded down the metal left around the pipe , drilled some holes in it and sandwiched it in between some layers of fiberglass .
On the first pic the filler neck is in for a test fit , it is approx 3,5cm high , and approx 1 cm will be visible over the tankbody .
in the lower 2.5 cm i cut some grooves with an angle grinder to increase ( at least in my mind ) the bond to the epoxy , then i put it upside down in a hole i cut for it in some styrofoam ,with the bottom part protruding and made a collar with fiberglass , it will be something like 1,5 cm wide , and tomorrow i will fuse it to the tank with epoxy .
And BTW sanding fiberglass is some itchy  sh.. :(

That looks good, I'm glad to see it back together.  I was a little worried for that beautiful tank.

Hey how old are you? I always read Norway has a great educational system and allows kids to take paths in their career choice at an early age. You have some serious skills.

Thanks , but I'm to old for that anyway  :)

Hi:) Looks great, fun to See another Norwegian on here. . Where are you located in Norway?  :)

Thanks  :)   I'm from Lillehammer , what about you ?

Nope , only thing left of the old tank is the fixing points , and sort of skeleton of the backbone tunnel , otherwise only fiberglass

Looking back on the need to cut open the tank to remove the styro, I would have thought it may have been easier to deal with the filler tube and fuel bunge at that point rather than waiting until it was all pieced back together.....Just a thought.  Would you agree?

Agree :) , and thats just what i did , put in the petkock bunge when the tank was apart , but the filker neck was easier to puy in afterwards .
Now the tank is actually finished , only thing that remains is the sanding. And smoothing , then primer and paint .
Next project now is the seat

I will use caswell tank liner to avoid the tank turning into goo .

So now i have fixed the fillerneck to the tank and laid one last layer of weave on the bottom and tunnel , so that pretty much completes the tank build  :D
Just sanding , and priming left ......
Went over to the paintshop (witch is litterally the next door neighbor to my garage ) and talked to them about the paintjob , and the guy behind the counter asked me what kind of bike i was restoring , i told him it was a 76 cb 550 , next question was : are you going cafe style ?  :)
That led to a long chat and they guy was totally into it, witch is never bad when you want some help with stuff , deal is i drop of the tank sometime next week , and they will prime it along with some other stuff during the week  ;)

Next project now will be the seat , need to get that rear hoop welded in place , and start laying out the fiberglass , more on that later

They have a technical forum as well.
Yo Yo Emo, I have been motivated by your glass. I have done some fiberglass before but for my bike I have been so focused on aluminum...but have no welding or metalworking skills. I have had an idea of what I want to do with my rear hugger for a year now (out of aluminum) and now, I will get it done. Using fiberglass.

Hi , i contacted caswell in the us , and they directed me to caswell europe in the UK , the tankliner is 45 £ plus shipping , witch is almost as much >:(
But they could combine shipping of up to four units for the same price , so let me know if you want to share shipping costs  :)

weekend and time for some work  :)
since the tank is done (for now) i need to build my seat and cauling next , but to do that i need to finish the frame modifications .
so i started cutting , away with everything sticking out , removed the mounting plates for the rear footpegs , the shock upper mounts (way to ugly in their original shape )and assorted brackets and fastening points , for now this is what i ended up with :

I will reuse the bolts from the old mount and make some new ones that flow better with the lines of the frame , at least thats the plan :)

You're a rather ambushes fellow and your efforts seem to be paying off.
Do you have any drawings of what you want the finished bike to look like or are you shooting from the hip?

Today i welded the frame together , got the rear hoops on , and new mounts for my rearsets .
The hoop going up over the frame will be visible with the seat tucking in underneath it , and the cauling as a separate piece behind it , don't know if that made any sense though  ;D , in my head its clear at least .
i wanted to put the rearsets on the old passenger peg mounts , but i think the original ones didn't look to good , so i cut them of , leaving the tubing , and then welded in two pieces of roundbar witch i had machined to fit the bolt of the new pegs .

And as a comment to the last picture ,Yes i am that anal , i really smoothed out the kickstand , i need to get my head checked ,i know  :P
