Parking on incline, Hard Start
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:34:18 PM »
Hey guys, my driveway slopes down towards my house.  I have been parking my bike backed in and have been having difficulty getting it to start.  I don't know if its the cold weather in combination with the slope but my question is will parking the bike on a slope cause any problems?

It seems like I am burning out the electric start sometimes, it starts making this barking noise.  I don't know if the carbs are getting flooded or what is going on.  I do shut the petcock off every time I park it.  I was also keeping it in first so I wouldn't have any roll back and I was finding it very difficult to then move the clutch lever into neutral after it sat for a day or so, I would have to grab it with my hand to get it to move.

Today I decided to just use the kick start until the engine "warmed up" instead of killing my starter.  Is this common when its cool outside? I am in the south so I know this is nothing compared to what a lot of you experience but I can't seem to find whats causing the problem, the hill or the cold.

My 750 has always been a bear to start in the cold. It has more of an excuse than yours however.  ;)

A suggestion though, pull the carbs and adjust the choke linkage so all the choke plates are synchronised and close completely, it makes a difference.

That is if yours is a 74 -750.

+1 on that choke adjustment. Also you may want to check your float levels using the clear tubing method. Last but no least, they can be cold blooded. You also may want to give the throttle a twist if you have an accel pump. I am not sure what year yours is.

it is a 74.  I have tried giving it some throttle once I hear it ignite but it dies.  It does seem that after a good many tries it will start.  You are probably right about the choke, my choke linkage broke a week or so ago in the middle and I am hoping to wait a little longer to take it off.  From eyeballing it, they all looked closed but they could be open somewhat.

Definitley choke related I'll bet. My K3 will start after sitting in a cold garage for a week with full choke, a twist of the throttle, and within 3 cranks it's running.

If you are using Pods which is a problem in itself you could give it a shot of starting ether in one cylinder and once that one fires the rest will follow. If you have the stock airbox you can't do that easily. I think you answered your own question, if the choke is not full on, you will have a hard time in cold weather.

How's it start when its not parked at an angle? From your description, I visualize that the rear is lower than the front?  If so, I'd suspect float levels and you'll never be able to fix it (start it easily) parked like that. IMO.

Thanks guys, MCRider- my bikes rear is lower than the front, I was wondering if that was causing some problems.  I just recently have started parking it like that and I have also just noticed the choke is broke so I could pin point it to one or the other factor.  Its probably a combination of them all but I'll try and park it level for now and see how that helps.

Could you please elaborate on that method?  Thank you.

To check the fuel float levels on a 750 with bottom drains, you simply put a piece of clear tubing over the bottom drain and hold it next to the carb body. You open the drain screw and hold the tube up against the carb body. The level in the tube will be that same as in the float. You of course have to turn the petcock to ON.  I made my tube reach to the top of the carb so gas will not spill out as I fiddle with the drain screw.
