How do you install the gas cap? CB500
« on: October 26, 2011, 08:45:14 AM »
I'm about 98% done on this bike I'm building. The owner had the tank and side covers painted - they look really great. But I'm having trouble getting the cap back on there. I think I'm missing a pin (or 2) and a spring that goes under the retention latch? And if you push the pin through, how do you secure it at both ends?

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

You're definitely missing the pin.  Some use a small bolt for a pin, and use a nut to secure it.

Here's a pic of the pin and spring you're missing.  I think Hondaman sells the pins but I wouldn't know where to get the spring.  Joker Machine sells the entire latch mechanism below.

The original pin is a really long rivet.  My latch broke and I bought a nos Honda locking gas cap latch.  It is held on by a long screw.  I think its a much better latch as I can close and latch the cap with one hand.

Thanks y'all! I got in touch with Bryan @ Joker Machine and he's gonna get me some bolts/nuts/washers & a spring. Great customer service and great products there at JM.

BTW here's the tank mocked-up on the frame. That paint IS nice!! :)

I did away with the rivet and got a SS bolt and locking nut. Looks and works perfect. Yours is in decenet shape I would reuse it.
