Wrapped pipes burst into flames!
« on: October 25, 2011, 12:43:58 PM »
So, yesterday I was trying to sort out some issues with my throttle response just off of idle and had my bike running on the side stand. I thought I had the problem sorted so I went into the garage to grab the seat and take it for a test spin. When I came out of the garage flames were coming up over the tank on the right side. The header pipes on the right were burning! It took me a few minutes with my hose to put them out and the damage was minimal (crispy points wires and burnt clutch cable end).

The tape itself was unscathed, but I am guessing that over time is absorbed oil and gas and the wrap worked like a candle wick, does this sound feasible? Anyone else ever have this happen?

Totally feasible.  Sitting at idle without air flow over the pipes and cylinders things can get very hot very quickly.  I have an old squirrel cage fan from a central air unit that puts out a lot of air that I use in front of my idling bikes, air or liquid cooled.   Have you had noticeable oil leaks going on?

Wow glad you are ok., I think a great instructional video would be for you to reinact the scenario. You may be the first person ever on the site to show how to save a burning SOHC  8). Just playing bud, glad you made the save though.

don't you bet on it my 650 burst into flames one time, I had a leaking carb and didn't realise it, when I hit the starter button up she went. Luckily I had a bucket of water nearby to dous the flames.

Old timers will remember Spikeybike's disaster.  Didn't he call it his "Phoenix" for rising from the ashes?
