Mounting a cafe' fairing/flyscreen
« on: October 23, 2011, 01:47:47 PM »
So, I picked up one of these fairings/flyscreens at Barber and I'm a little confused about how to go about mounting it on a CB500/550.

It's pretty obvious that I just drill some holes and maybe use some spacers to mount it using the headlight bolts, but how do I install the headlight ring?

And a pic of how it looks attached (nabbed from the 'web).

If i'm not mistaken, you just mount it "over" the headlight.

Right, but to get access to the bolts at 3 and 9 o'clock, usually the ring is off and you go from inside the bucket. If I do that and mount the screem (easy), how do I then have access to the screws to reattach the ring?
It's probably something simple that I'm just not seeing.

I guess I could double nut a bolt from inside, leaving a threaded "stud" coming out of the bucket, then install ring and use acorn nuts to attach the fairing to the stud?

OK, I see now what you mean.

Is that a small bracket running from the screen to the fork in the picture?

I think that's just the headlight bracket on that particular bike. Same situation on our Honda's, just a chrome sleeve that slips over the forks instead.

Done a few.  Mount the side brackets to hold the fairing, reinstall the headlight and bezel, slip the fairing over and secure.  It will mount like a "viper" fairing that can be seen on eBay or out of JC Whitney.

Yea, I think that's how it was done, studs replacing the original turn signal stems, then you gotta think about where the signals are going..

Signals can be shorty LED or something off of a modern sportbike that is flush to the fairing sides.

Rigid, do you have any pics? The screen wasn't sold with any brackets....are you saying you used/made something to hold it on other than the stock headlight ears/bolts?

Yes, the mounting kit that comes with those has some flat steel straps that have a hole in one end and a slot cut in the other to slip the fairing bolts onto.  You basically bend them to fit.  A much nicer solution is to use a threaded stud as you mentioned out from the headlight mounts, maybe with an acorn nut on the fairing.  Really extra sweet is the Harley style with the stud and nut molded or bonded on the inside with a smooth exterior.  I will try to find a pic for you.  All the bikes I have done fairings on are sold.

Ah,...mine didn't come with any brackets or anything. I bought it at the Hotwings booth, too. :(
I can visualize a bracket mounting.....

I sent Hotwings Glass an email since it was one of theire screens. Here's the reply they sent:

 "Greetings!
Check at your auto parts they should have metal clips to hold the nuts that secure the head light then you can just screw the head light mounting bolts in.
Later
hotwing"

I'm not really sure I understand what he's talking about.  ???  Anyone know?

I think he is referring to a nut plate type mounting.  Basically it holds the nut in place inside the headlight bucket so you can screw a stud into it from the outside without needing access to the inside.  It is a form of blind fastener like a tinnerman nut.  No matter how you go, it will have to be a custom fabrication. The strap of steel idea allows moving the fairing around for fitment but the stud mount looks nicer.

I have the same fairing for my K2

I am going to mount it same fashion as you, double nutted bolt with an acorn nut on the end.

Simple, effective, and clean. The strap on there just allows something to want to move (2 pivot points)
