Key # not in the Honda key code book?
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:43:53 PM »
Well, mere hours before I planned on getting my key copied with the two blanks I had to order (no one here carried it), I lost the key.

I found the key code # on both the ignition and seat lock, but when I took that code to the dealer, and even a professional locksmith, they couldn't find it in their books/database/whatever.

I know it's a Honda key code, because I've found NOS keys on eBay, as well as NOS ignition sets.

Is there any way to get a replacement cut, by providing them with the actual cut #s the code # points to or something? I need a key ASAP, which is why I didn't just order a NOS one.

Bike is '74 CB550, and the key code is T9927.

I just bought one at an old dealer by the number only. It was pre-cut.

I have to recommend HondaKeys - I just bought 2 sets of keys from just #'s this summer from him (ignition and seatlock/steering lock).  He is good people - answered my questions w/o pushing his service, then came through for me.  Good luck!

I usually just go to Home Depot or Lowes and match the key profile to a blank.  From the blank it  is easy enough to file a new key at home to match the old one.

I had keys cut from the code recently and they told me that only the last three digits matter.  Hope this helps.

Also there is a note on the SOHC4 site about key cutting.  Instead of opening the switch as shown, here's a hack.. wipe the blank with a Sharpy, then put it in the lock and wiggle it back and forth.  This will wipe some of the ink away where the key needs to be grown away.. use a Dremel to make small relief, re-ink the blank and repeat.

To clarify - I'm 99% certain the keys I got from HondaKeys were not cut to order.  They are NOS or equivalent numbered factory keys that he just pulls from his supply.

He does not cut, all are NOS-at least that is what he said in an email...Larry

I already ordered a set of NOS keys.

But my dilemma was that nobody could cut a key with the code, because it wasn't in their database. The Honda dealer didn't have any TXXXX, or 9XX in their database. Even with the last 3 numbers, it only went up to 8XX.
