God makes me want to sell my 550K and pic up a 750. Even if I have to put money into it. I love the styling.

The 500 or 550 is a better designed bike IMO and quite some engineers in the industry share this view. When the 500 was released, it was Porsche's boss that sighed: this will be the bike of the century. Eventually the masses choosed the 750 for the title. Just ask yourself how often you will use the extra power a 500 can't give you. 1% of the time maybe? All the time you have to put up with a much heavier bike.

I had a 1976 CB550 back in the 70's and yes it was a very nice bike. But it was the CB750 that really caught on and that the general public  fell in love with and had to have. At the time it was the biggest and fastest thing going and did everything well. IMO it should be #1 because it changed motorcycling completely ;)

It is best to have both, a 550 for solo, spirited riding, and the 750 for its two up ability, and resistance to wind buffeting.  For the long highway run with two, you can't beat an Evolution Harley with a batwing fairing and backrest.

True enough. Personally the 750 never appealed to me. I can't see myself doing the adventurous holidays I'm used to on a bike that I can't  upright myself when it has fallen on it's side. I can do that with mine without even removing the luggage. Also on curvy mountainroads (and that's where the fun is) any 500 or 550 beats a 750.
But your point is true.

For the heck of it, I tried the Salesman's tactic of balancing a glass of water on the bikes seat and reved it up. It does stay right on the seat without any movement at all. Motor Balance at it's best. Like the video plays, this bike single handidly put Triumph out of business.... and changed the motorcycling world forever! That Helicopter jet engine bike is out of this world. And Jay Leno's story about melting the guys front bumper at a stop light is tooooo funny.  :D
As for the debate about which Honda is the best, everyone is gonna have their opinion, but the best part of this debate is both bikes are Honda's and that makes everyone a winner!

I've owned both models. A CB750 is much more powerful, the CB500/550 is way-down in power and revs much slower, especially at high speeds on highways or running w/ modern bikes. Not many advantages to having alot less horsepower available. (except for a beginner)

Yeah, or if it doesn't break down every 50 miles or lose the magic electrical smoke every time you turn the key it is boring. Dependable and boring.

I never tried a glass of water on the seat . We used to put the bike on the center stand and  balance a nickel on edge on the case below the carburetors and then start and rev the engine. Very impressive to customers, especially at the time when many of them owned British bikes. We had Nortons on the floor that literally threw gas out of the carbs at idle and the Triumphs would actually back up when revved on the center stand. And the Honda sold for less than either of them. I really loved the British bikes but the Honda simply put them out of business.

I think the boring comment is within the context of when the CBs were first released and as compared to a shaky Triumph or what not. Now-a-days, they have way more character when riding, then compared to many modern cruisers and sport bikes.

The reason they got boring was there was too many of them back in the day.. They were only hot for a while, The Z1 and bikes after that made the cb750 look a bit slow..
Thety did get boring to me, that why we mod them..
For those of you that go to the bigger rallies, if you see 200 cb 750s with Windjammers in one day, its sorta enough for a while..

but they are cool again now..

That's not really a characteristic of the bike though.  It is the same if you go to Sturgis, or the River Run.  Or a BMWMOA rally.  Not much diversity at those events.

For a bike to be great to me, it should be interesting.  A 50 Cub isn't very interesting.  Not much of a list that doesn't have Crocker or Vincent on it.

Sym is making the Symba, a copy of the cub with some newer tech on it. It is much much smoother shifting and running than the original.

Sym has made parts and bikes for Honda since 1962.

110cc, runs about $2K new.

There is one down side to this video.  People who acquire one through whatever means and want to sell it end up doing a google search or something and then find that video and afterwards think they have a real gold mine.  I have even seen people cite that video review in craigslist ads!  An ordinary junker that might be worth a few hundred all of a sudden they want 1k for a dirty non runner.   ::)

I'm sorry, but a Vespa is not a motorcycle. No scooter is; they're all just motorized roller skates, after all. It's hard to believe it's ranked higher than a Harley knucklehead in this video. Shameful.

The '750 is an all-round fabulous bike... just a bit too big for my tastes. Thank Honda for the CB550. Great bike as well, but in a more managable size
