Petcock filter removal?
« on: May 16, 2006, 04:26:05 PM »
Hello, so here it goes... I have a 78 SS tank (CB550) that has been Por-15 with out the filter being removed. I check the vent hose it seems to be venting. Now fuel is getting through, but its really slow, so I wanted to get some ideas on how to remove it and run an inline filter instead? Also with the filter being plugged I've noticed that even on reserve the bike runs out of fuel before the tank runs out of gas??? I think that plugged filter is not letting fuel get though when the gas gets low? So whats the best way about removing this??? Thanks, Clay

I have a 76 550K and I tried running inline fuel filters and they were horrible.  There just wasn't enough room to run them properly.  If your petcock screen gets plugged up all the time it might be time to pull the tank and get the junk out of it.  I pulled my petcock off when mine wasn't getting gas and the screen was completely plugged.  So, I am doing the molasses in the tank to get what ever rust is in there out.

I have a 78 SS and the problem I had with the reserve was blockage in the petcock itself (rubber washer had disintegrated). Might be something else for you to check anyway.

Once you remove the Petcock, with a small pair of needle nose you can remove the tank filter.  Soft Plastic so try not to crush to hard...slips right out...

If the filter was left in during the por-15 it might be sealed into place so to speak.    Might have to drill it out and replace.
Is the por crap like the kreem crap?

No such thing as a 78 SS CB550F.  Last model year was 77.

Anyway, if I understand this correctly, you painted your in tank filter screen?  Nice goin'!

If so, it's ruined.  Be aware it incorporates a stand pipe for main fuel supply.  The screen is intended to be withdrawn from the petcock hole.  However, I would expect that the paint has glued the thing in there and it seems unlikely you'll salvage anything of it during removal.  whatever you use to remove it, dril,l punch, pick scrape, etc., take care not to damage the tank bung inside or out.

Were I you, I'd replace the screen/standpipe assembly with a new or used good one.  The lines are so short that each time you remove the tank, it will be a constant headache.  And, if you leave the lines long they kink or trap air pockets.

But, that's just me.  Most every one else on the forum owns stock in the filter companies.  So, you just can't buy too many of them.  ;D

Anybody out there know where I can find a new or used petcock filter for a 76 550F? I just bought mine and it had been sitting for 10 years. It ran ok for a bit but then crapped out. Found rust in the tank and when I pulled the petcock/filter found a small tear in the mesh. I'm going through the carbs now but I'm having a problem locating a filter. Any help would be appreciated.
