Timing WTF????
« on: October 27, 2011, 06:56:52 PM »
I need some help. I'm getting spark to all plugs. 4,3 are burning hot. 2,1 get colder respectively. I checked the carbs, which are clean. Gas flows nicely, no clogs, no corn residue. Plugs are all in good condition.

Now, I cannot seem to get the timing correct. I "static" timed it first, which helped a huge amount, and idles much smoother. But I cannot get the marks to be where it states they should be according to Clymer. It seems I run out of adjustment before the marks are where they should be.

When I did the static timing, the test light goes on at both points when I touch each side.(yellow and blue). For example, the marks match up, light goes on each side. I rotate the engine to next mark, and the light goes on on each side. Is this correct?

I'm stuck. Any ideas? I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, or over looking something....

did you set the point gap first?...the point gap affects timing...
If it works good, it looks good...

you can't get the marks to line up? Skip clymers, it's written by a room full of brain damaged chimps. Crack the honda shop manual, and you'll be done in minutes.

The gap is not set at the timing marks.  Set the gap at highest point,  or greatest opening it can achieve with point cam rotation.
Then for step two, rotate the plate position for the light at the mark as the crank moves past it.

If you still don't have enough adjustment range, then check the FAQ about main plate movement, or buy some points that are not Diachi.

Cheers,

What I don't understand, is when I get the marks to where they should be, the light goes off on both sides. Is that correct?
Don't pay attention to the 2-3 points when doing the 1-4 points.  Do 1-4 points first gap and time, then do gap and time on 2-3.  They function independently, but share the same point cam.

Further, you are looking for the light to come on as the 1-4 fire mark aligns.  The coil fires when the points open.
