Someone help...

Rear wheel does not fit. It appears I incorrectly mixed and matched the collars/spacers.

Spec:

76 750k - drum hub laced to 16" ( I purchased it with cast wheel..and in a process to convert to wired wheels )

driveside collar - 18mm
brakeside collar - 28mm

additionally, I think the axle bolt might be too long.

You have the spacers lined up correctly.
The smaller drive side spacer goes in the sprocket carrier by about the amount you seem to be off.

Make sure spacer is seated properly then try again.

I did try again. Pushed it in firmly. Same.
Drive side collar is protruding about 4 mm.

That look right. If the sprocket carrier is seated firmly into the hub, then I'm stumped.

It should work. Has the swingarm somehow been tweaked out of shape? Can you spread the swingarm to get it in there?

Yes, I agree. Swingarm might be the culprit. Perhaps PO hammered it in to fit a non standard wheel. But do you think it's safe to "un hammer" back out to fit it properly?

Do the shock absorbers lean in towards the bottom? Closer at the bottom than the top? They should be vertical. Can't tell for sure from the pic.

Measure the back of the swing arm for width and hopefully someone can do theirs and see if that is the problem first.Be fairly hard to casually bend in a swing arm.What was on the back before a Comstar mag or some other wheel. Where did you buy the hub/wheel axle set-up you have now and what year was it advertised for.Did it come with the sprocket and brakes.If it was a 77-78 hub set up maybe they were different widths,not sure though as I have never had one. ??

I was going to look at mine for the brake plate. His plate looks to flare out further than I would expect. I can certainly measure my SA too.

if your sprocket carrier is from a 77-78K that would throw everything out, as they are wider by 8 to 10mm.

Best bet is as above, get an exact measurement of the swingarm width as there shouldn't be any variance from someone else's.

Guys take a look at the left fixed 'nut' on the axle in the picture. Is that a 77-78 as all of my 76 or older K's are the smooth round with the hole through it.

Pic 1 - original wheel ( at least that's how I purchased it )
pic 2 - craiglist wired wheel 16" ( unknown source ) and drum brake from ebay listed as 1978A
pic 3 - inside opening of swing arm is 19.5" and from just eye balling the shocks I think they are narrower at the bottom

Think you are going to find that you need some K parts like the axle and the brake drum etc.There can be some interference when you swap different models,especially parts after 1976 which are all pretty much the same on the earlier machines,
PS-Sure that rear wheel is a 16 and not a 17. Probably just a different style rim but look how short these spokes are on a 16' 'Harley' rim and Honda hub I have are.

My K2 swingarm is 9.5" wide from the insides. Should be the same as a 76. Did you add a digit?

I suspect your drum is wider than the swingarm. Two things: being a 77 and being an A, would make me suspicious. Both the 77+ years and the A had things different than the 76 and earlier.

Now a non-issue, but the shocks look fine to me. Optical illusion from the offset clevis on the bottom.

Sooooooo......back to ebay and this time find a 76 drum? OR perhaps I can artfully grind the drum just enough to make it fit.......

If you go the drum or wheel route anything from a 71 to 76 K model would be golden.You may need the axle as well

Main thing is to have you chain line up correctly. Are you positive that the rear sprocket you have is for a #530 chain ? Is it a 48 tooth? Some later models used a 630,the K's not sure about the Automatics or A's.

Rear sprocket is 48 teeth. ( thank god ) Yes, it's 17" not 16". I might have gotten mixed up because comcast is 16".

so can I grind 77 drum ( it has pads and and looks nice )?

We're not really talking about the drum are we? More likely the backing plate?

I'd think if the sprocket lines up, you can take down the taper of the brake plate where it merges with the spacer. Or have a machinist take the spacer down?

Main thing as stated is that the sprockets line up.

Okay..I grinded the backing plate ( not drum hub ) and the wheel fits nicely into swing arm. But the wheel is not centered. I measured between the rim to inner swing arm and I get the following:

driveside - 52mm
brakeside - 42mm

Center is off to right side. Is this normal?
