Oil Filter Spacer?
« on: October 28, 2011, 06:52:14 PM »
I just changed my oil for the first time tonight and once I put everything back together I found a spacer in the used oil pan. What is it and where does it go? It's not in the manual

Ah, the ol' spacer...at least you have one. Most of the bikes I get have it missing. That spacer goes between the filter and the spring. It is used to keep the spring from digging into the rubber on the oil filter. I don't think you would need to take the filter off and put it back on there unless you did not add the oil yet. Just put it back on next change.

Modified: I am taking it for granted it is the washer for the filter. But you should know there is also a crush washer on the drain plug too. That one is a not as big width wise as the filter washer.

even with a full sump you only drop the filter housing worth of oil, catch it in a clean container and pour it back in,that way you can say you did it properly,,i would expect a shop to throw out that washer if they found it and knew what it was.

Just a note of caution.  Your spacer - does it look like a washer?

I recall that the 78 CB750F had a spacer that looks like a collar - due to the added oil filter "heat sink" that was added for that bike.  This collar is needed - otherwise the oil isn't passed through the filter.

See pic - are you talking item 5 or item 9?

#9 is what I forgot to put in the bike. I didn't see #5 in there but didn't really look all too well. I'm just going to put it in tomorrow just to be safe. Also I only saw one large O-ring

Did #7 come off with the filter housing?  If not - only one large o-ring.  Still should have replaced one large and one small o-ring.  Some filters don't come with the o-rings, though.  The Honda filters usually do.

#7 did come off but didn't look for an o-ring. It probably is still on the bike. I'm about to go fix it when I get home to put the spacer back in. I'll let you all know what kind of problems I get into now.

You have to get an extra o-ring when you get your filter.  The washer #5 is no big deal.  I didn't have one for 8 years.  finally ordered one for the hell of it.

I did actually have the o-ring. They came with the honda filter. But I don't have the washer.

The honda filters come with one large and one small o-ring.  I always order the 2nd large o-ring with the filters as one goes behind the base (#7) as well as the one which goes between the filter housing and the base.
