wiring issue please help..
« on: October 28, 2011, 08:11:46 PM »
Hi all.. gotta situation here. I bought a 78 cb550 with just the frame, engine, wheelset, box of parts. Recently  I bought a 72 cb500 to replace pretty much everything that was missing. After configuring the wiring I tried starting the motor. It would crank but it didn't have spark. That issue aside. I came to find out that my harness didn't have a fuse box. The only fuse it had was a 15a single glass one near the battery. I bought a fuse box but nothing to plug. I've checked the wiring  in the manual and the 550 has a fuse box and 500 has the 15a only. I'm confused. I'm sure the 500 has a fuse box. Now I'm lost. What wiring harness do I have? Theres no plug for a fuse box. Is one nesarry? Or should I hack one in the harness? Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

The Cb500 doesn't have a fuse box, just that one 15a fuse Im no expert, but i think your gonna find virtually nothing on the 72 cb500 will work on your '78 CB550. Two completely different bike's.  the '77-78 bikes are even different from the earlier 550's. You need to get a harness for a '77-'78 bike, not to mention all of the other stuff you're missing.

The early CB 500 models had only one 15A fuse, the CB 500 K2 [ED, F, G] had 3 fuses, 5A (tail), 7A (head) and 15A (main).
CB500K2-ED Excel black

the 550 harness will work with some modifications as you go along and find out whats needed or moved etc.
