Filters Made to fit, with creative touch

Ok so i was playing around with some ideas and heres what i settled for, you guys think ishould keep this setup or hassle the ebay seller untill he gives me my money back, ill probably just use these since its pretty original.





I was also thinking of using the stock air box peice(the long rectangle that all the carbs plugged into) and running it to the side of the bike to give it kind of a ram air set up using one large single cone.

Hey, if it runs and you like the way it looks, cool.

Looks good but won't the increased length cause the 2 outside cylinders to run differently (lean, rich?) than the inside cylinders?  If it runs fine though, keep them!

Looks neat - turn them so they point out - might look interesting.

What did you use to make the new boots though?  They look good enough to be a factory job!

You mean like this.  I scored this setup on Ebay 2 years ago for 20 bucks but I havn't actually mounted it yet.  Should do that soon :)

I have seen this exact setup again on Ebay from time to time.  Very rare from what I guess, must be a mod from the 70's.

If you're going to go that far, why not buy a K&N replacement for the standard airbox?

Basically because I've never had a complete airbox setup.  My bike came with K&N pods when I got it and this looked pretty cool and would allow I think a more even airflow like the stock setup and allow the carbs to injest static air rather than wind baffled air. Maybe that makes sense, not sure :)  I have my eye on a complete air box assembly now that only needs a filter though.

If the old timers recall, I did something similar with copper pipe & my V-Stacks. I liked the look, but ended up just throwing the stacks directly on the carbs.

You are 100% correct. All the carbs are meant to draw the same amount/volume of air at the same time in order to run correctly. If the two outter carbs have a longer intake path, they will run differently over the two inside carbs. If anything , make all the "rubber elbows" the same length, and see what happenes...

I'd put them all pointing down that way you'll have the same airflow direction into each carb.

Air doesnt know/doesnt care which angle it is comming in it, all it cares about is the path, and how long it has to travel that path to get to where it needs to go (CARBS). If I were you, I would get 4 bends of the same length and make them all the same, or if you want to do the middle ones straight, just make sure the length of hose is the same as the bends...

I thnk they are pretty cool. Get 90 degree bends on all 4 but just experiment with how you position them. Not so much for perromance but just to see what looks good!

I would really like to use that stock air box, but run a pipe to the outside so it gets a sort of ram air affect.

True "Ram Air" doesnt come into effect untill around 75-80mph, and eventhen isnt a "big deal"
I remember a buddy of mine who bought a new Pontiac Trans-Am "ram air" back in highschool, and we fought back and forth about how it works, when it comes into play, etc..

We actually called Pontiac's eng. division and talked to them about what "ram air" actually does, and we were told the "ramming" effect doesnt really come into effect untill around 75mph..

If anything , do it so it looks good...

well you can compare the F2 and F3 CBR600's, F2 didnt have it and F3 did, other than that i think the engines were identical and the F3 is a faster bike in 0-60 and top speed. Buy yea it would only actually be RAM air when i was going pretty fast and it would depend alot upon how i ran the piping. Mostly it would just look cool.

News just in from Mr. Curmudgon.

It looks like an afterthought, kludge, add-on.  Might as well put Band-Aids all over it, so people can clearly see it is recovering from an injury and understand why it the way it is.  Can't imagine why anyone would think it was a well engineered device intended to be placed in that position.

On the plus side, it should keep spiders and other critters from nesting inside the engine as it sits for long periods of time in disuse.  It's pretty clear the bike ain't goin' to be ridden much or very far, unless you get special rates on chiropractic services.

Someone else said it best, though.  Beauty is in the eye of the owner... in this case, with very, very, dark glasses on, I think.  Wasn't it Charles Manson that said " I think a swastika tattooed on my forhead looks REALLY cool!"

Technically speaking, Honda went to a lot of trouble to keep the air flow laminar both into and out of the carbs. The Radiator hose internal diameter is larger than the carb intake Internal Diameter, creating a step at that interface where airflow can turbulate and become disticntly non-laminar.  The same step diameter change occurs at the filter to hose interface.
I predict you will get modal rich and lean points across the RPM band regardless of effort with jetting changes.  None of this will matter so long as you don't actually run the bike, or keep it below, say, 4000 RPM.

You did ask for an opinion didn't you?

You could shape the ram in a funnel style with a larger open end than piping. You would catch more air which then gains slight pressure as it goes through the piping.

Don't mind TwoTired. He gets pissed at anything less than perfectly original. Just stamp some Honda part codes into your radiator hoses and he'll pipe down.  ;D
