Topic: New CB400F Owner

I'm a new SOHC owner. I had tried to find something at the Barber Vintage bike rally, but the pickings were thin and the prices were too high. When we got back to Texas I found a 75 400F on eBay. It's in good shape, but it had been in storage for 5 years. It took all day to soak the carburetors to get the tar out of the bowls and to get the slides unstuck. I guess this proves that fuel stabilizer won't last for five years, but it did keep the fuel tank from rusting...After getting the carburetors back on it fired right up. I had hoped to weld up the stock muffler, but it was too thin to weld. I am looking for some help on selecting a gel cell battery that I can relocate under the seat (I'm thinking about making a cafe bike out of it.) I'm also looking for help on my choices for a new muffler. I've looked at your bikes of the month, and you guys have some great rides. I'm hoping to use some of your expertise to help me get my bike back on the road. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Welcome to the forum.  I have used the Emgo 17" shorty-around $60 and looks similar to the stock style. I actually prefer the shorter length of it...Larry

Welcome fellow 400F brother.
I have a 75 400F (Blue) currently undergoing a bit of a redo, in so much as it was a bit untidy and needed a tidy up. Taken me about 3 year to pull apart and start a redo (work keeps getting in the way). Plenty of help here, just ask and supply photo's.

Thanks for all of the inputs, I like the silencer. I'm going to have to check into that. Any special website that you recommend? The bike is in pretty good shape for setting up for so long. I need to fix a weeping petcock, horn and muffler before it can be inspected and ridden. I need parts for my daily driver (98 Super Hawk) before I buy more parts for the 400. A new rear tire and sprocket and chains is going to hit the project bike budget pretty hard. Right now I'm staying busy polishing off the minor rust and oxidation it has from being in storage.

Even I keep it fairly stock, I've got to get rid of those blinkers and get something a little smaller. This is what it looked like before any work was done to it.

I appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Has anyone seen another 400F with this paint scheme? The paint looks professionally done with clear coats over the decals. The underside of the tank and under the cap matches. The PO said he bought it from the original owner who was a friend. He claimed the paint was original, but I have my doubts. It's in great shape, but I'm not a big fan of the checkered flags...It going to stay for now, but I don't know for how long.             Thanks,
