Oil screen removal question
« on: November 02, 2011, 09:51:01 AM »
Quick question, can I remove the oil screen without removing the oil pump? I took the pan off today as part of my extended oil change and saw a few metal shavings sticking thru the screen, so I want to take a look.
Thanks.

I don't know. Hard enough to remove it when off bike. Need room to lever the pry tool.

But I would say, try a vacuum cleaner on the screen. The parts went into the screen from the bottom. You may be able to suck them back the same way. Rub them gently to loosen them, without actually pushing them into the screen more. Then vacuum.

Good point, like to avoid messing with something that doesn't need to be messed with :-)

I did do this with a pump in hand. vacuum got most of it out. Tweezers the rest but for a few I left in.

If its on the bike, there will be oil involved so don't use Mother's vacuum.  :D

If you take the oil screen off be real careful with the rubber as it tends to get brittle with the age and heat.  They can be difficult to put back on.

New oil screens are available from Honda.

Actually I decided to not touch it. Didn't want to use the house vacuum, neither my shop vac :-) Since there were only a few tiny pieces in there I took them out and moved on....thanks guys!
