Cruise Control / Throttle Locks ?
« on: May 17, 2006, 03:27:09 AM »
Hello all,

Has anybody installed a cruise control or throttle lock on their bike?  If so, what brand did you use, how well does it work, and was it a challenge to install?  I have a series of long trips planned for the summer (including an Iron Butt) and I'm exploring ideas which will give the old throttle hand a break and ways to maintain a constant cruise speed.

thanks in advance to any thoughts or insights,
- Tom

There was a thread about this a while back.  There's a link in the FAQs to a "Throttle Wrist-Cramp Eliminator".

I had one on my 82 650C, and it didn't work very well at all.  It would constantly slip back, and I would have to re-adjust it.  Just pissed me off more than it helped.  It was all plastic, and I'm not sure how it was attached, but I didn't like it.  Maybe they've improved them since the mid 80's?  I'd just try to stay away from the all plastic varieties if possible.

I have a couple of the cheap ones and they work fine.  Like them cause they are hardly noticeable.

Try a Throttle Rocker. Little plastic thing that slips on the right handgrip and sticks out so your palm helps hold the throttle. I have a fancy $100 Throttlemeister throttle lock on my BMW, I don't think I've ever used it since I bought the $10 Rocker. Look in the back of most any bike mag, about $10 including shipping.

There was a throttle lock on my bike when I bought it. It's one of the first things I removed along with a cheesy windshield, highway bars and a king/queen seat. It worked well enough but I didn't like the idea of the throttle being locked. I now use a Throttle Rocker which works great. A good $10 investment if you ask me, although it does seem a bit overpriced for a piece of plastic.

Vista cruise is still being made. it uses a thumb lock that works well as long as it is adjusted right. You dont need to touch the throttle at all. they are about $30 or so.

When I had my BMW R100RS, (POS) I had to fit a throttle lock because the high frequency vibration would make my hand go to sleep on a regular basis, so I had to constantly remove my hand to shake out the "pins and needles".

The earlier CB750's had a built in throttle lock screw under the throttle body, but it's fiddly to adjust while trying to concentrate on the road, so one of those "thumb lock" jobs are my preferred option for long distance cruising.

I'd prefer one to the throttle rocker, although I suppose both would be good, for different reasons? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I used a throttle lock years ago and was not pleased with it.  It worked as intended, but with a steady throttle the bike would slow down going uphill and speed up on the downhill side.

I bought a $10 Kuryakin Throttle Boss this spring and find it works great.  I can't take my hand completely off the grip, but I can relax enough to relieve the tension.

Use one all the time I believe it is a Vista cruise. Wore one out and now have my second one. I tried the paddle thingy and did not care for it. Found it in my way when I wanted to shift my hands and it always was in the wrong place when I wanted to use it so I was always adjusting it
