how do you route the push pull throttle cables?
« on: November 01, 2011, 12:06:58 PM »
im putting my bike back together and time trying to figure out how to route the push pull throttle cables.....

i have clip on handle bars so now there is quite a bit of slack.

if i try snaking the cables around anything when i turn the front end right or left and pull the throttle it dosnt snap back quickly.

even if i have the cables ran straight to the carb rack turning the steering to the right give my throttle a little lag then the middle and then when i turn it to the left it snaps really fast.

did i mess something up instaling the lines in general?

With my clipons I ordered -5inch cables from Motion Pro....in retrospec they are perfect but I think I would have done better at -3.5 to -4 inch.  They are not expensive and makes a word of difference to your build.

That takes care of the "slack" issue.

There are a couple other issues to be solved as far as routing goes.

If you route them the wrong way and bind them they have a tendency to hold the throttle open and it can't be closed without the force from the push cable.

I routed mine behind the headlight, through the triple and down the left hand side of the bike then sort of below the coils and through the frame to the throttle bracket.

I had to realign my coils to get some space there but the alignment is ideal ad the throttle snaps open and closed like brand new.

Also, just a tip I figured out...connect the push cable first then the pull...and then adjust the pull cable tension until the slack is mostly gone but not completely. If it is too tight the throttle will bind up.

There's a fair bit on this subject here.

I'm not sure if it will help with different bars though. Hope it works out for you.

First you need to route them between the fork legs not outside the right leg.

That's what I did...maybe wrong but the shorter length of my cables worked well through that area for me.

RTFM...lol.  No seriously though, it is in there, near the back.  In one of the addendums I think.  Also, you can route them the same way as stock with shorter cables.  Just make sure to get the right length.

Spiider hit it on the head. Contact motion pro and order the shorter ones. No matter how you reroute you will have excessive play or have the opportunity for a hang up. They are cheap... XS, didnt you rebuild the engine from the bottom up? I have been following your build, Like the frame color.

Aren't the motion-pro -4" or -5" cables like super expensive? They have a -3" for relatively cheap, but aren't custom ones pricey?

i partially updated my thread with some teaser pics of my progress. ive been swamped with school and im on a 3hr nap rotation every 14hrs to keep up with studying.........

i have not rebuild the engine yet. im trying to get her on the road and see how the engine is when driving it. mostly i want to know if the primary chain has enough play in it that deems it to be replaced. and if it does need to be replaced im caring the motor down in the basement and completely rebuilding it from the bottom up. i hope i wont have to do this because i want to start my cb750 build!

MotionPro has some "stock" shorter cables that are only $15 each.  I believe they were around -3.5.

They would work perfectly on some builds so consider them for sure.

What I did was hook everything up and then with the one end disconnected I bypassed where it needed to go, estimated how much shorter they should be for me to be happy and spec'd that for them to make them.

As a result I ordered all custom cables and they were about $60...yes, each...but the cables are perfect for my particular setup. (And they look really clean on the front end without extra cable looping out.)

As far as I was concerned...they are practically a lifetime purchase for the bike, make sure they work great and look great as well.
