Carb and Ignition Questions (What and Why)
« on: November 03, 2011, 08:02:56 AM »
Hello everyone, i am building a 76 750K and am in the process of putting everything back together. i am torn on which direction i should go as far as carburation, i had the engine punched out and a 836cc kit installed as well as a stage 2 cam from Cycle X, heavy duty valve springs etc. i am leaning toward the cycle x dual carb setup but does anyone have any information good or bad with this setup and which ignition should i use? go with dyna or go with cycle x ignition? please help in informing me on this any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ben! Do a search on the Cycle-X Carb kit. many people and tried them. The biggest issues you will run into is clearance. They are not designed to fit on the stock CB chassis. they are made for cruiser frame. They can be made to work with enough engineering and know-how, but they will not be just a bolt on part.

As for ignition, again, do a search. I have run both a Dyna and the Cycle-X optical ignition. If (okay, let's face it - WHEN) I build another CB bike, if I choose to swap out the ignition, I will go with a Dyna. They are both Set-it-and-forget-it options, but the Dyna is far more plug-n-play with the CB system. If you go with the Optical ignition be prepared to be "technically creative" as it will take both the left and right sides of your brain (one side controls artistic things while the other side is the analytical side) to get it mounted and wired in.

These choices are all about what the engine is built to do. Its purpose.
Honda uses 4 carbs and 4 exhaust tubes. They were trying to get the most power and efficiency out of each cylinder.

Sometimes when you build  a machine it may have other considerations.
Like considerations for style, ease of maintenience. etc.,.

Cars have one carb or one fuel injection plenum to distribute the intake mist to all of the cylinders through elaborate intake manifold designs.
On a motorcycle often you do not have much room to work with.

As far as a stock frame I would just use 4 carbs. one for each cylinder. That way you can tell what is going on by looking at the plugs or using a infared anyalizer pointed at the cylinders.

Just ask Ken at Cycle X. He sold you the cam and he knows what will work. Save yourself all the time and experimentation.

Forget the twin carbs as KB02 said, they do not fit the stock frame. There are quite a few ignitions that work on these bikes, the Dyna, there are plenty of guys that swear on the Dyna but recently there have been a few failures and Dyna isn't to accommodating when it comes to fixing or replacing anything. Hondaman on this forum does a retro fit to the standard ignition using the points and it works very well, Member pamcopete has the pamco ignition which is digital and well received around here, his aftermarket service is great and if you PM him he will be more than happy to help. Then there's Boyer  ignitions and cycleX. I suppose it all depends on what you expect from the ignition. As far as carbs go, there are a few options, leave the stock carbs and rejet, or have them bored out, Mikuni's are good and early Kawasaki ones will fit using the manifolds from Sudco, Cyclex has the bigger RS32 mikuni's reracked to suit the Honda's, thats what a few of us here are using and they are an excellent carb with lots of scope for tuning, better than CR's in that respect. So if i were you i would do some reading and ask some more questions, as there are plenty of options available to you, before jumping in and buying anything else just yet..... ;)
