Mirrors - yes or no?
« on: May 17, 2006, 11:17:52 AM »
I'm hoping to get some feedback ... I've ordered a pair of clubman bars and I'm considering whether to put on bar end mirrors but I'm not sure I like the way they look.

If I run without them am I just asking for trouble?

CC,

In my own humble opinion, I'd always get mirrors, bar end would work, and they have tons of styles to choose from to lessen your dislike to something you could tolerate. I just can't stand the idea of not knowing what is behind me.

Here in Illinois, state law says that you need to atleast one mirror to be legal.
I would go with one barend mirror on the left (which is what I plan to do)...

See earlier threads about being back-ended at stop lights.  :(

I agree, couldn't stand not seeing what was behind me.

I put mountain bike barend mirrors on my clubmans, I like them a lot better than the kind that is in my avatar, much more streamlined.  I thnk barends work best on clubmans.

Online, off ebay, got em for around $30.  They are convex as well, so I have no blind spot.  At first it is freaky when I see the full face of the car in the mirror, but I look over my shoulder and they are still a little too close to want to change lanes.  But I have gotten used to them now.

Those look good, any problems with vibrations shaking them loose?

As far as the law, yeah I think I will need something. I believe it depends on the year of your bike and whether when it was produced it came with signals and mirrors, if it didn't than you're okay. But besides that rpyles scarey experience is more than reason enough!

Do those mount in our onto the bar.  My new clip-on's although 7/8" are aluminum and the ID is smaller than a steel 7/8".  Going to make mounting my barends fun as the internal bits no longer fit :(

Nope, they are a tight fit.  they stay put.

Do those mount in our onto the bar.

They mount into the bar, so like I said they are a tight fit, prolly won't work for your clipons then.

I'm probably stuck running UGLY stock mirrors or dumping $70 each for CRG bar ends that clamp on the bar instead of in the bar.

Chris, you can get different sized "slugs" for your bars that a barend can thread into.  There are a couple of different kinds of bicycle barends- you'll want the more expensive metal ones.  A good mountain bike shop would have them.  The slugs are a vailable through Parts Unlimited, I think- possibly in the dirtbike catalogue?  I'll try to rmember to get some part numbers tomorrow for the slugs.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!
